The Wethersfield Ag department is not a large one, although it does enroll every farm boy in our high school. A single days visit with them however, would probably convince anybody that its members are about the most enthusiastic in this or any other school. Visit their big Farm Shop and you will find it packed from end to end with every kind of farm project, ranging in size from a hog house that is "big as a bungalow", thru many other articles they have made including feed bunks, wagon boxes, hay racks, feeders and similar pieces of farm equipment. Go on a field trip and you will see, not just a few, but scores of fine livestock which they own and care for as part of their Home Project work. Attend their annual FFA Hog Sale as we did lastfall and you will see them auction off more than $3,000 worth of pure bred hogs. Check through their financial records and you will find that most of the Ag boys have good sized bank accounts in their own names. There is always something doing in the Ag department--about the only complaint one ever hears is "there just isn't enough time to do all the things we need to do." And altho the atmosphere is distinctly "free and easy", loafing or misconduct is practically unknown. Probably the reason for this is that self government is a reality in this department. All decisions are made by the FFA officers in conference with the teacher who has supreme faith that "You fellows can do anything you make up your mind to do", and of whom the boys all say "He will back you to the limit." In addition to its regular high school classes, our agriculture department also conducts evening classes for veterans, and during the winter months has adult farmer classes, with about 100 in attendance every Monday night. 40
