The Senior Class of Wethersfield High School
Kewanee, Illinois
Dedication
CHARLES H. BICKHAUS
We, the Senior Class of 1954, respectfully dedicate this volume
of the Green Quill to Mr. Charles H. Bickhaus, instrumental
instructor. His diligence and outstanding teaching
ability is reflected in the excellent bands he produces for
Wethersfield High School each year. His enthusiasm toward
his work gives us all a feeling of pride in our school. It is
through the efforts of such faculty members as Mr. Bickhaus
that we have an Alma Mater of which we can be justly
proud.

Superintendent's Message
School Administration is a business - - - - the successful engagement of
which determines the efficiency and orderliness of a school system. As such,
it is not an end to itself, but a means to an end. School Administration is a
cooperative project--demanding wholehearted support from the administrative
officers, all the teachers, and all of the students. The cooperation of all
concerned has resulted in the progress made. It is our hope that this growth
will continue from year to year.
Senior Class History of 1954
On a bright September day, 52 freshmen entered into high school. This was the class of '54. Our first week was
spent in getting accustomed to high school and initiation. We elected the following officers: Danny Johnson,
President, Judy Peoples, Vice Pres., Dick Heinrich, Sec.-Treas., Howard O'Neill, Student Council Representative.
We gave a school party in March, which was a lot of fun and a success.
Our Sophomore year, we began feeling we knew our way around school. We elected the following to lead us
through the year: Varney Dana, President; Mary Ann Pratt, Vice Pres., Keith Craine, Sec.-Treas., Lloyd Lindstrom,
Student Council Representative. Our class sponsors were Miss Hillquist and Miss Conner. We put on a
"Turn About Dance" in January.
We began our Junior Year in our wonderful, new high school. We elected the following officers: Eileen
Charlett, President, Dean Golden, Vice Pres., Milt Carlson, Sec.-Treas. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Murphy
and Mr. McDonald. In November we put on "Under the Gaslights" for our junior class play. It was an old
fashion melodrama and it was a huge success. On May 22, we put on the annual Junior-Senior Prom.
During our Senior Year we elected: Milt Carlson, President, Richard Dana, Vice Pres., Pat Coziahr, Sec.-
Treas., Betty Dexter, Student Council Representative. We had Mr. Johnson and Mr. Makinson for our sponsors.
We also had three from the class who were student council officers, Mary Ann Anderson, Eileen Charlett and
Dean Golden. The seniors sponsored the annual Christmas party.
We wish to thank all who have made our high school days a success, and leave our hope that all future classes
will profit from their High School years as we have.
Every student must begin school as freshmen, and we, the class of 1955, began
our formal education on August 29, 1951. The sixty five eager freshmen
chose the following officers: Leonard Arentsen, President, Bob Melchin,
Vice President, Joan Rose, Sec.-Treas., and Leora Smith, Student Council
Representative. Mrs. Murphy and Miss Orwall were our class advisers.
Our Sophomore officers were: Larry Walters, President, Gary Hodgson,
Vice President and Irene Golden, Sec.-Treas. We chose Mr. Makinson and
Mr. Crawford to be our advisers. We won first place in the Homecoming
Parade with our float and slogan.
This year, as Juniors, we elected Keith Nelson, President Gary Hodgson,
Vice President, Bernadine Bennoodt, Sec.-Treas. Our advisers are Miss
Allene Whitmyer and Miss Beverly Moore. On November 14, we put on our
Junior Class Play, "Seventeen is Awfully Young." Our biggest project of the
year, is raising money to finance the Junior-Senior Prom.
The sophisticated sophomores you see strutting about the halls of Wethersfield
High School, were long ago Green Freshmen. Exactly, one year ago.
Sixty four was the enrollment in our freshmen year. We chose for our officers,
Jerry Kirman, President, Lee Lindsey.Vice President, Sharon Ouart,
Sec.-Treas., and Robert Richards, Student Council Representative. In
columns of eight we followed these officers diligently to the tortures of the
freshmen initiation. After a harrowing day of hazing, we took delight in a
party, given us by those cruel Upper Classmen.
This year we chose the following officers: R. Richards, President, John
Pence, Vice-President, Lyle Reecy, Sec.-Treas., Jerry Kirman, Student
Council Representative.
The Wethersfield Band is divided into three parts: The Marching Band, Pep Band, Concert Band. The Marching
Band, composed of 56 members, played for all home football games and was host to the Galva Band
at the Galva game, traveled to Toulon and Walnut for two games, led the Homecoming Parade, led the
KewaneeFall Fesitval Parade and attended Western Illinois State College Homecoming Festival and entered
parade competition, receiving a Division I Rating of Superior.
The Pep Band, 26 members, under the direction of student conductors, played for numerous pep assemblies
and for all home games. The Pep Band is small in size, but is partially a select group, taken from the concert
band. The Pep Band plays all music at sight, having no special rehearsals.
The Concert Band is composed of 70 members. They gave their Annual Concert for the January PTA meeting,
with band members doing the conducting. Student conductors are Betty Dexter, Virginia Jenkin, Patricia
Coziahr, John Townsend, and Robert Kuzminski. The band played a special concert for the Rotary
Club at the Hotel Kewanee in February. The entire concert band entered the Illinois High School Association
Music Contests at Moline with high hopes of being allowed to advance to the State Final. Twelve
soloists and eight ensembles also took part in the contest. For the first time the Wethersfield Band was host
to the Blackhawk Conference Band Festival. Over 350-musicians from the Blackhawk schools participated.
The band gave its Fifth Annual Formal Concert in the 1st week of May. The Concert Band also furnished
music for the High School Commencement Exercises and performed for numerous Churches and Civic Organizations
throughout the year, with solos and ensembles.
view them in the yearbook but are now ready for viewing and reviewing
after two successful years.
Associated with the Y.M.C.A. organization of Kewanee, 111. our purpose
is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school and
community high standards of Christian character. Our slogan being:
pure thoughts, pure words, pure actions; colors; red, white, blue exemplifying
Sacrifice, Purity and Loyalty.
The officers who helped us come through the first year were: President,
Projects for the year 5Z-53 were giving canned goods to the Welfare
of Kewanee on St. Patricks Day and May Day. Tri-Hi-Y also sponsored
a Cotton Ball inviting Kewanee students to attend.
Program chairman and vice-president Mary Ann Pratt furnished us
programs of high interest.
Our biggest undertaking was helping the Student Council sponsor a
Midwinter Formal held on February 6 which was a huge success.
The Wethersfield Ag department is not a large one, although it does enroll
every farm boy in our high school. A single days visit with them however,
would probably convince anybody that its members are about the most enthusiastic
in this or any other school.
Visit their big Farm Shop and you will find it packed from end to end with
every kind of farm project, ranging in size from a hog house that is "big as a
bungalow", thru many other articles they have made including feed bunks,
wagon boxes, hay racks, feeders and similar pieces of farm equipment. Go
on a field trip and you will see, not just a few, but scores of fine livestock
which they own and care for as part of their Home Project work. Attend their
annual FFA Hog Sale as we did lastfall and you will see them auction off more
than $3,000 worth of pure bred hogs. Check through their financial records
and you will find that most of the Ag boys have good sized bank accounts in
their own names.
There is always something doing in the Ag department--about the only
complaint one ever hears is "there just isn't enough time to do all the things
we need to do." And altho the atmosphere is distinctly "free and easy", loafing
or misconduct is practically unknown. Probably the reason for this is that
self government is a reality in this department. All decisions are made by
the FFA officers in conference with the teacher who has supreme faith that
"You fellows can do anything you make up your mind to do", and of whom the
boys all say "He will back you to the limit."
In addition to its regular high school classes, our agriculture department
also conducts evening classes for veterans, and during the winter months has
adult farmer classes, with about 100 in attendance every Monday night.
