Balmedie Country Park<br />

The s<strong>and</strong> dunes here stretch 14 miles from <strong>Aberdeen</strong> to just<br />

north of the m<strong>out</strong>h of the River Ythan at Newburgh. A great<br />

place to fly a kite, play hide <strong>and</strong> seek, build s<strong>and</strong> castles or run<br />

freely on the beach.<br />

In recent years the s<strong>and</strong>y beach has won the Seaside Award.<br />

Duthie Park <strong>and</strong><br />

David Welch W<strong>in</strong>ter Gardens<br />

Situated on the banks of the River Dee, a park of some 44 acres<br />

consist<strong>in</strong>g of open spaces, ponds, founta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> floral displays<br />

<strong>in</strong> all seasons. The park is a mass of crocuses <strong>and</strong> daffodils<br />

<strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g followed by roses <strong>in</strong> summer through autumn. You<br />

can climb the “rose mounta<strong>in</strong>” <strong>and</strong> smell the perfume of over<br />

100,000 roses.<br />

The park has play <strong>area</strong>s which are very popular with families. In<br />

addition the park is the start of the Deeside Walkway <strong>and</strong> cycle<br />

path to Banchory. With<strong>in</strong> the park there is the spectacular David<br />

Welch W<strong>in</strong>ter Gardens hold<strong>in</strong>g a wide variety of plant material<br />

<strong>and</strong> collections from all across the globe. The garden also has a<br />

shop <strong>and</strong> a restaurant.<br />

Haddo Country Park<br />

The 180 acres of parkl<strong>and</strong> featureswoodl<strong>and</strong> walks, some of<br />

which conta<strong>in</strong> a diverse range of wildflowers, nature trails, a lake<br />

<strong>and</strong> ponds with ducks, swans <strong>and</strong> geese. The park conta<strong>in</strong>s a<br />

range of play equipment.<br />

Hazlehead Park<br />

This is the largest park <strong>in</strong> <strong>Aberdeen</strong>. There are walks, a<br />

hedge maze, sports pitches <strong>and</strong> a playground. Plenty of open<br />

grass <strong>and</strong> flowers galore <strong>in</strong> the rose, heather <strong>and</strong> azalea<br />

gardens. The small zoo has lambs, rabbits <strong>and</strong> pot-bellied<br />

pigs, as well as a wonderful walk-<strong>in</strong> aviary full of exotically<br />

coloured birds.<br />

Johnston Gardens<br />

A park <strong>and</strong> gardens with streams, waterfalls, ponds,<br />

rockeries <strong>and</strong> a rustic bridge that helps to make this one of<br />

the most charm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>area</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the city. The garden is planted<br />

with rhododendrons, spr<strong>in</strong>g bulbs, heathers <strong>and</strong> alp<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The ponds are full of irises, aylesbury, mallard <strong>and</strong> muscovy<br />

ducks. There is also a children’s play <strong>area</strong>.<br />

Victoria Park<br />

This is <strong>Aberdeen</strong>’s oldest park. Full of flowers, shrubs <strong>and</strong> trees,<br />

there are plenty of seats to take <strong>in</strong> the scenery <strong>and</strong> it is ideal<br />

for picnics. There is a conservatory used as a seat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>area</strong> for<br />

<strong>in</strong>clement weather <strong>and</strong> a small glasshouse feature with alp<strong>in</strong>e<br />

plants dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer months. The central feature of the park<br />

is a founta<strong>in</strong>, particularly unique, as it is made from fourteen types<br />

of granite.<br />

Arnhall Moss Local<br />

Nature Reserve<br />

This is one of the last raised bogs <strong>in</strong> lowl<strong>and</strong> <strong>Aberdeen</strong>shire.<br />

Over the past years birch trees have <strong>in</strong>vaded Arnhall Moss <strong>and</strong><br />

begun to dry <strong>out</strong> the <strong>area</strong>. The new habitat of birch woodl<strong>and</strong><br />

supports a different range of <strong>in</strong>sects <strong>and</strong> birds mak<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

reserve a spectacular place to visit with much wildlife to see.<br />

Common woodl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong> birds such as wren, great tit,<br />

blue tit, coal tit, redpoll, mallard <strong>and</strong> moorhen are abundant<br />

<strong>and</strong> mammals such as pipistrelle bats, roe deer, foxes <strong>and</strong><br />

stoats, either live on or use the site.<br />

In early summer K<strong>in</strong>corth Hill is a blaze of yellow gorse flowers.<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> late summer you can see a purple haze of heather <strong>in</strong><br />

flower. Look <strong>out</strong> for rabbits, shrews, voles or even roe deer too.<br />

The waters of Philorth site are known for the diversity of its<br />

Formart<strong>in</strong>e & Buchan Way<br />

The Formant<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> Buchan Way is a 54 mile off-road r<strong>out</strong>e<br />

l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Dyce with Ellon <strong>and</strong> Maud at which po<strong>in</strong>t it splits<br />

<strong>in</strong>to two l<strong>in</strong>es, lead<strong>in</strong>g to Fraserburgh <strong>and</strong> Peterhead. The<br />

r<strong>out</strong>e which also acts as an all year round wildlife corridor,<br />

uses the trackbed of a former railway l<strong>in</strong>e to go through<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g farml<strong>and</strong>. The nature of the Way makes it an ideal<br />

recreational r<strong>out</strong>e between the various towns <strong>and</strong> villages<br />

located along its length. Most sections are also suitable for<br />

horserid<strong>in</strong>g, cycl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> all terra<strong>in</strong> pushchairs.<br />

Girdle Ness Circular Walk<br />

Girdle Ness is the headl<strong>and</strong> that guards the s<strong>out</strong>hern side<br />

of <strong>Aberdeen</strong> harbour. The short walk around it takes <strong>in</strong> the<br />

lighthouse, sea views <strong>and</strong> Torry Battery - built to defend the<br />

A walkway that starts off from the beautiful Duthie Park then<br />

takes you along from the City <strong>out</strong> <strong>in</strong>to Deeside country. With<br />

a number of access po<strong>in</strong>ts you have options on how long you<br />

wish to walk or cycle <strong>and</strong> as the path is based on the bed of<br />

Peterculter to Banchory <strong>and</strong><br />

Aboyne to Ballater Sections<br />

The Deeside Way leaves <strong>Aberdeen</strong> along what is the bed of<br />

the old Deeside railway l<strong>in</strong>e some 16 miles to Banchory. For<br />

much of the way the r<strong>out</strong>e runs close to the River Dee. There is<br />

a gap between Banchory <strong>and</strong> Aboyne before a further section<br />

takes you along more of the renowned Deeside countryside<br />

between Aboyne <strong>and</strong> Ballater.<br />

The North Deeside Road is never very far away from the path<br />

<strong>and</strong> the excellent bus l<strong>in</strong>ks between the towns on the r<strong>out</strong>e<br />

<strong>and</strong> city of <strong>Aberdeen</strong>.<br />

Nature Reserve<br />

This is the first <strong>area</strong> of unspoilt, natural coastl<strong>in</strong>e north of<br />

<strong>Aberdeen</strong> harbour. Look <strong>out</strong> for seals on the s<strong>and</strong> spit near<br />

the m<strong>out</strong>h of the river. Birds, <strong>in</strong>sects, <strong>and</strong> wildflowers are<br />

prolific <strong>in</strong> the salt marshes <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong> dunes. Bats can be seen<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>gs. Keep to the boardwalks <strong>in</strong> the <strong>area</strong><br />

Dunnottar Castle<br />

An impressive ru<strong>in</strong>ed fortress on a rocky cliff 50m above the<br />

sea. It is reached by walk<strong>in</strong>g down, then up steep gravel <strong>and</strong><br />

grassy paths. The rocky beach below is made up of large,<br />

rounded stones <strong>in</strong> a great variety of colours.<br />

Nature Reserve<br />

The dunes on this part of the coast are an <strong>in</strong>ternationally<br />

important site for birds. In spr<strong>in</strong>g you can see the largest<br />

colony of eider ducks <strong>in</strong> the UK. There are good walks<br />

through the coastal heath <strong>and</strong> mobile s<strong>and</strong> dunes. The<br />

Visitor Centre has natural objects to touch, floor jigsaws<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation ab<strong>out</strong> the <strong>area</strong>. Other facilities at the visitor<br />

centre <strong>in</strong>clude a purpose built classroom, which can be used<br />

Loch of Strathbeg<br />

Brita<strong>in</strong>’s largest dune loch is a joy to visit any time of year. In<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter thous<strong>and</strong>s of wild geese, swans <strong>and</strong> ducks fly <strong>in</strong>. In<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> summer you can see gulls, terns <strong>and</strong> wad<strong>in</strong>g birds<br />

rais<strong>in</strong>g their young, <strong>and</strong> you may catch a glimpse of an otter.<br />

With panoramic views from the Visitor Centre, there’s plenty<br />

Tullos Hill<br />

There are many types of birds to look <strong>out</strong> for <strong>in</strong> this <strong>area</strong> of<br />

open l<strong>and</strong> close to the sea cliffs. Comb<strong>in</strong>e a walk here with a<br />

visit to Doonies Farm to see rare breeds of farm animals.<br />

The University of <strong>Aberdeen</strong><br />

Natural History Centre<br />

A ‘h<strong>and</strong>s on’ educational resource of several natural history<br />

collections (animals, plants, fossils <strong>and</strong> live animals), situated<br />

next to the Zoology Museum <strong>and</strong> Cruickshank Botanical<br />

Gardens. Its contribution to biodiversity education has<br />

earned its Eco Centre accreditation. The centre also runs<br />

public events - please see the website.<br />
