The level of employment growth from 2000 to 2010 has been strongest in Palmerston North City at 22%. Overall growth for the Manawatü region was 20.8% over the same period, with the wider region at 14.2%. New Zealand employment growth from 2000 to 2010 was 18.9%. Growth in employment has been driven by healthcare services, government administration, defence, distribution and construction. This trend is forecast to continue over the next 10 years. The rural sector continues to lead solid economic growth in the Manawatü region, which recorded a 1.2 percent increase in GDP in the year to June 2010. In contrast to New Zealand national figures for 2009, there was a 1.2% increase in the number of jobs in the Manawatü region and a 4.7% increase in employee earnings, supporting the recession proof reputation of the Manawatü economy. Employment in manufacturing and tertiary education is significant. Palmerston North City is widely known as ‘Student City’ due to the many thousands of people attending Massey University, UCOL and a number of other private educational institutions. Manawatü also has a national reputation for having good schools. Together the many educational organisations support a significant number of science and research facilities in the region. Palmerston North and Manawatü have an emerging reputation for Food Innovation. Food Innovation New Zealand (FINZ) partners and a range of other organisations, such as Fonterra and Massey University, have already made significant steps forward in establishing our region as a significant food innovation centre on the world stage.
