TRI LOCK<br />

<strong>The</strong> design <strong>of</strong> child resistant packaging for<br />

medicines has remained relatively unchanged for<br />

the past thirty to forty years. <strong>The</strong>se packages have<br />

been successful in being child pro<strong>of</strong>, however<br />

they neglect the user, especially those with joint<br />

problems. Due to the difficulties in opening these<br />

types <strong>of</strong> containers, it is not uncommon for people<br />

to decant the contents into unsafe non-child pro<strong>of</strong><br />

packaging, a practice which currently causes<br />

an estimated 10,000 cases/year <strong>of</strong> accidental<br />

poisoning in the UK, mostly involving small children.<br />

<strong>The</strong> elderly are also affected by this poor design,<br />

those who have no one else to help them open their<br />

medicines, can possibly miss vital doses <strong>of</strong> drugs,<br />

which could help improve their quality <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

My product is designed to be as easy to open as<br />

possible while still being fully child pro<strong>of</strong>. This is<br />

accomplished by a three stage logic lock, that does<br />

not require the user to be stronger or have better<br />

co-ordination than a child. <strong>The</strong> lock is opened by<br />

the simultaneous light pressing <strong>of</strong> the three buttons,<br />

with the central button being the main locking<br />

button, that must be pressed first or at the same<br />

time as the other two, for the product to unlock. <strong>The</strong><br />

product is designed to be able to purchased by the<br />

user who can then easily attach the product to the<br />

majority <strong>of</strong> their current drug containers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> thread on the base <strong>of</strong> the product is designed<br />

to lock, and cannot be removed easily once<br />

attached. <strong>The</strong> product can also be used by the<br />

manufacturer who can take extra steps to make<br />

sure the design is firmly locked onto the container.<br />

This product helps people that have to regularly<br />

take medication, to worry less about how hard<br />

it may be to access their drugs or the need for<br />

decanting the drugs into a different, non-child pro<strong>of</strong><br />

container. Improving quality <strong>of</strong> life for the adult while<br />

still assuring that any children are safe from being<br />

able to gain access dangerous substances.
