200 million people worldwide have diabetes. If
diabetes is not monitored and controlled then it can
lead to more serious conditions such as blindness,
kidney failure and amputation. Research has
proven that if diabetics exercise regularly and eat
healthily, their condition is much less likely to cause
any serious problems. Diabetics should test their
blood glucose levels 5 times a day, however 95% of
diabetics fail to do this because of the need to draw
blood every time they test themselves. The death
rate for diabetes has risen by 22% since 1990. This
is because of increasing problems with obesity and
lack of individual awareness to how to control their
condition. It is estimated that 1 in 3 diabetics are
actually unaware of their condition and therefore
fail to monitor and control their condition. There is
a gap in the market for a product that can make the
life of a person with diabetes much safer.
> Career Aims
To work for a well established company, that
provides a graduate training scheme, that can
set me up for a career in design and marketing.
My product is designed to be a part of everyday
life. There are 2 parts to my product. The 1st part
is a blood-glucose and heart rate monitor which
straps around the upper arm and uses Glucon’s
Aprise technology to monitor blood glucose levels
in real time without the need to draw blood. When
blood-glucose levels become too low or too high the
device will vibrate and alert the user. The 2nd part is
an MP3 player and nutritional planner that interacts
with the other device and is marketed to be sporty
to draw away any stigma of it being a product
related to diabetes. The user can input their dietary
information into the device and the product will
provide the user with feedback for example through
graphs regarding their dietary intake, heart rate and
blood glucose levels. The user can store information
such as reminders for medical appointments and
emergency contact information. The Mp3 device
can clip onto a belt/pocket or simply be carried in
the user’s pocket.
