RE-DESIGN OF THE
MUSIC CD CASE
Music CD cases/packaging have been the same
for a very long time. They may present the artwork
in a nice way but, there are a lot of problems
associated with the packaging.
One of the biggest problems facing the original
jewel CD case is that it tends to break very easily,
especially if handled in a vigorous manner. Another
problem is its durability. The case is very prone to
breaking with slightest impact, especially the top
and bottom faces which the artwork lies beneath.
Adding to that, the old CD poses a very delicate
area. This area is very important as it aids in rotating
the top part of the package to show the CD and
make it available to use. However, this area tends to
break easily and quickly. In doing so, the user will
then lose the top part of the package and eventually
will lose the CD, as it may fall out of the case and get
lost or ruined.
“ Idea is to give music CDs a package that
will make them distinct in the market.
They are carrying art and therefore have
to stand out next to normal cases.”
Role in management (brand, design
or construction)
My product is designed to primarily add value to
what it is housing – a music CD. The whole idea is
to give music CDs a package that will make them
distinct in the market. This is because the packages
are carrying art and therefore have to stand out
compared to a normal CD case. The product is
also more convenient to use as it offers better
ergonomic features. Adding to that, the user will
not have to worry about the case breaking or losing
parts because of the way it is designed. The top
and bottom parts can be put together and taken
apart easily.
The material used for the case is the same one
that is used to package DvDs. This material was
used because of the durable properties it acquires,
making it resistant towards heavy impact.
Finally, the way the case opens and closes is much
easier than the old CD case as the top part of the
case slides to show the CD housed in the bottom
part of the case.
