15.0 SWABBING/CHARGING THE WATERMAIN<br />

15.1 Swabs shall be supplied by the <strong>City</strong>’s Representative on the site. The swabs shall be<br />

numbered and the <strong>City</strong>’s Representative is required to witness the installation <strong>of</strong> swabs by<br />

the Contractor. A swabbing schedule shall be prepared by the Developer’s Consultant and<br />

approved by the <strong>City</strong>’s Representative. The swabbing schedule shall indicate where the<br />

swabs are to be installed and removed.<br />

15.2 Swabs up to and including 250 mm may be taken out <strong>of</strong> hydrants, if available. If hydrants<br />

are not located in suitable areas then risers shall be installed by the Contractor, at his<br />

expense, to facilitate the removal <strong>of</strong> swabs. All risers shall be properly restrained and<br />

installed above ground. All swabs over 250 mm must be taken out <strong>of</strong> risers. Refer to<br />

BSD-45.<br />

15.3 The <strong>City</strong>’s Representative shall remove the swabs. However, the Contractor shall be<br />

required to provide assistance, at his expense. The Contractor must supply a means <strong>of</strong><br />

swabbing the system as determined by the <strong>City</strong>’s Representative. It will be the responsibility<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Contractor, during swabbing, to supply a water course for the water to escape without<br />

causing damage/erosion to the existing grade <strong>of</strong> the property or adjacent properties.<br />

15.4 Any damage caused by swabbing the watermain must be restored to its original state or<br />

better, by the Contractor. The <strong>City</strong> shall not be responsible for any damage or repairs during<br />

swabbing.<br />

15.5 All swabs shall be accounted for and removed from the system prior to pressure testing the<br />

system. Any swabs that are not accounted for must be located and removed, including<br />

material, labour, equipment and excavation, with no cost to the <strong>City</strong>.<br />

16.0 PRESSURE TESTING<br />

16.1 The Contractor shall strive to install a system that has zero leakage and zero pressure drop<br />

when tested. Pressure testing <strong>of</strong> all new water systems will be completed by the <strong>City</strong>’s<br />

Representative.<br />

16.2 The pressure test will be for a two hour period at 150 psi zero leakage and zero pressure<br />

drop. If the pressure test meets this criterion, the system as a whole, shall be accepted.<br />

16.3 If the above criterion is not met, the system will be divided into sections no greater than<br />

305m in length. Each section will be tested individually and will be required to meet the<br />

allowable leakage and test pressure criteria, as outlined in the AWWA <strong>Specification</strong><br />

C-600-99; Section 4 "Hydrostatic Testing" and Section 4.1 "Pressure and Leakage Test".
