j) Uses of emphatic stress patterns:
- Additional stress to qualify or correct a previous statement, e.g. I hear you have a
boat. “A small boat, yes.”
- To emphasise a certain important part of a statement, e.g. You have to check-in at
five. You have to check in at five. You have to check-in at five.
- To stress alternatives in options, e.g. Do you want a super burger or a regular
burger?
k) Intonation: Characteristic patterns: Common rising and falling intonation patterns
for the various functions listed in section 2.
Orthographic competence involves a knowledge of and skill in the perception and production of
the conventions and symbols of which written texts are composed.
In practice, learners should know and be able to perceive and produce:
the form of letters in printed and cursive forms in both upper and lower case.
the proper spelling of words, including recognised contracted forms.
