Sitko Report...Vegas While Troy, Nathan and Wayne were making the long haul with the race car, Randy and myself landed at the Las Vegas airport, it was 9:45 am, and 103 degrees already outside. Stifling; I couldn't envision how we were going to work at the race track in that kind of heat. Decided to go to Wal-Mart to buy some big fans, now we were set.. Everyone arrived in one piece (luckily Troy, Nathan and Wayne avoided hitting the big elk on the way down), so we headed out to the track Thursday to work on the car. No racing today, we were just checking everything over to make sure it was as good as it could be. Very warm, but not so stifling as the day before. Checked the cam timing, and it was off by 4 degrees. That's weird. Took the front cover off the motor to check, and all the bolts were loose. Disaster averted. Weather forecast for Friday, testing day, was windy (25 mph), with gusts to 55 mph. Friday, arrived early at the track, again taking care of some small details. Also re-stripped the blower, thought it was a good idea since the air is so thin there. The weather guys were actually right, too windy to put the awning up, and by 3 pm, they had called off the test session. That puts us behind the 8 ball, we really needed to see what our 6.04 Edmonton tune-up would do on this track and in this air. <strong>Page</strong> 20 e-mail ads@quick-times.com Saturday, 3 qualifying runs to get in the show. Quickest 8 qualify to race Sunday, and there are 24 funny cars on the property. First run, 6.27 at 214 mph, that would have been Fridays test run, not too impressive. Jumped on the engine hard on the second run with almost 3% more nitro and more clutch, a much improved 6.06 at 224 mph that put us in the 12th spot. The number on the board said 5.99 was the current bump spot, we needed to somehow sneak under that number! 2.5% more Nitro, and a few adjustments of the port nozzles, and there it was, our first 5 second run, 5.96 at 227 mph. After high fiving on the starting line, we realized that the bump spot had changed to 5.92, so we finished 10th. Still happy with the 5.96 though. Since we were not racing on Sunday, we were able to watch Troy go rounds in the Ace nostalgia alcohol funny car. It was exciting to see him go all the way to the final in his first race with the car. We made great strides this weekend, didn't hurt anything, and had a lot of fun doing it. We look forward to our next couple of events to see if we can improve a bit more.
