Her clients, who vary in age, gender and occupation, share one characteristic: a desire to have hair removed from their arms, legs back, eyebrows, up- per lip or other body parts. Electrology offers these people a way to remove unwanted hair — permanently. In a series of office visits that can continue for weeks or months, a probe, or needle, is placed at the base of each hair follicle Then an electrical current runs to the root, killing the hair-producing follicle a little more each session, until it no longer grows hair While the procedure can be painful for some people, topical creams are available that numb the skin Many of O'Byrne's clients also share a source of embar- rassment about their physical Wedding-Day Makeup Tips for Contact-Lens Wearers Most brides spend extra time applying makeup 1*1 that wedding day. "There are people who wear long-sleeved shirts 12 months a year, even in 99-degree weather," she said because of unwanted hair on their arms. "I make people feel better about themselves and that is important." Now along with electrology service O'Byrne has begun to offer laser hair removed with affiliation with Dr. Richard Sharpe, a North Shore dermatology and cosmetic surgeon who has several years experience working with lasers. Keep false-eyelash cement, nail polish and remover, perfume, and cologne, which can damage the lens plastic, away from lenses. Hair spray slmuld be used before putting in contacts. Generally, two to six treat- ments can remove large areas of "even the densest hair," according to Sharpe. Laser hair removal is becoming more common, although Sharpe em- phasized the substantial train- ing involved to become qualified. O'Byrne, who is already a registered electrologist and has practiced for 10 years, took a post-graduate course in laser hair removal, in the fall of 98, and shortly thereafter began her collaboration with Sharpe. The three most important elements in successful laser hair removal, according to Sharpe are: properly trained electrologist and doctors; new laser equipment with long pulse and dynamic cooling, which cools the skin mil- liseconds before the laser fires, and informed patients, who know what to expect. Ideal candidates have pale skin and dark hair, which enable the light beam to clear- ly focus on the contrast — unwanted hair. The major difference be- tween electrolysis and laser hair removal is with electrolysis, one hair is removed at a time, where as the laser, 40 hairs are treated at a time, and the process is much quicker," explained Sharp. It is also more expensive, with sessions starting at $100 and going up to $1,000 per visit. However, many people need only two to six sessions, as op- posed to several months needed for electrolysis. Lauren is a 36-year-old engineer who fit the ideal pro- file of light skinned and dark hair. For years she said, her thick arm hair distressed her. "Arms are supposed to be feminine," Lauren said. "I had a lot of hair, and it bothered me." Finally, she decided to do something about it, and O'Byrne performed laser hair removal on her. After one session, the hair was significantly thinned out, and two months later it has not grown back. She described the pain as "not so uncomfortable that it's un- bearable," and added she was pleased with the results. "It sure looks natural and subtle," she said. "I would suggest it to anyone." The processional was the chorale setting "Wachet Auf" ("Sleeper's Wake") from Cantate 140 by Bach, and for the recessional, Scarlatti's Sonata in A.' The ceremony also included music from the film, "The Deerhunter" and the Beatles' "In My Life," sung by one of the guests. Gallo says that if her son were getting married, she'd suggest Handel, "or some ceremonial music that would be interesting." An occasional choice is Henry Purcell's trumpet voluntary, usually played with organ accompaniment. "It's nice and ceremonial sounding," she says. "I guess when you're coming down the aisle you want everyone to look." By KAROL STONGER Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) - "You can be gorgeous at 20, charm- ing at 40, and irresistible for the rest of your life," Coco Chanel once said. She was speaking of a woman's worldli- ness, and it's something every mother of the bride — or groom — might take to heart. Probably at no other time is she made so aware that her job as a parent is entering a dif- ferent and diminished phase. And probably at no other time is she so aware that, despite her best efforts, her waist is thickening and the crow's feet are multiplying. Hey, Mom. Brush back the tears, spend a little time and money on yourself and look and feel irresistible! It's easier than you think because, like it or not, many bridal couples today are cutting parents out of the planning and footing at least some of the wedding bills. Jerry and Marjorie Jaffe's only daughter, Bryce, is planning a July wedding, not in New York City where she was born and where her family still lives, but in Lake Tahoe, Calif. If Marjorie was bothered at first, she's grateful now. "I'm not sure where I fit in on the scale of being tradi- tional or striking out in an indi- vidual way," she says. But she is sure that the changing role as mother of the bride "frees me from doing what I always thought 'should' be done." The Jaffes have learned is that there are few "shoulds" in today's weddings, except per- haps to keep things practical. Bryce, a former dancer now studying osteopathy, chose black for her attendants because it's a flattering color and the dresses can be worn later. For the same practical reason, she and her intended, Tyler Munson of Los Gatos, Calif., gave their mothers free rein in their dress. Such personal style is important and — yikes! — even sepa- rates are OK, according to stylists like Phillip Bloch, a current favorite of many stars.
