WILMINGTON-BASED MISSION OF DEEDS - FleetBoston Classic Tournament Director Tracy West of Acton (left) presented a $2,000 donation to Bruce Munson of Woburn, executive director of Mission of Deeds of Wilmington. FleetBoston Classic Mission of Deeds gets $2000 check WILMINGTON - The Fleet- Boston Classic is donating $251,057 this year from the 1999 tournament to nearly 20 local organizations, including the Wilmington-based Mission of Deeds. The Mission of Deeds, founded by Reading-Woburn businessman and long-time Winchester resident Anthony Triglione, assists families in this area. The donation was made by Tournament Director Tracy West to Woburn resident Bruce Murison, the Executive Direc- tor of the Mission of Deeds. Donations from the 1999 tournament put the Fleet- Boston Classic over the $2 million mark in donations made since the event began in 1984 and helped the Senior PGA Tour set a record for combined charitable donations in 1999 of $11,050,000. This year, the tournament's name changed from BankBoston Classic to Fleet- Boston Classic, resulting from the merger of BankBoston, its former title sponsor, and Fleet Bank. Become your own best friend'' Admission will be free and re- freshments will be served Lowe's eyes site near Woburn Mall By GORDON VINCENT WOBURN — After 10 years and nearly half that many changes, a proposal for a home improvement retail store in East Woburn has finally made its way to the drawing board. As part of the package, Everett developer Thomas Kennedy is proposing $4 million worth of traffic improvements for the roads surround- ing the site. "What I'm doing is taking a horrible traffic situation and offering to make it much better for the city," said Kennedy. "The catalyst is the home improvement center." The council will likely hold a public hearing either later this month or in March. Principal- ly, Kennedy is asking to build a 131,000-square-foot Lowe's Warehouse, which would be the first or second in Massachu- setts, depending upon the timetable. ]'Already established with 538 stores in 37 states, Lowe's is similar Home Depot, with additional departments like a gar- den center, a home decor department and an appliance sec- tion. ! , "It's one of the top 200 com- panies in the world," said Ken- nedy. "It's similar to a Home Depot, with a Lechmere Sales component to it." Kennedy first targeted the location between Mishawum Road and Commerce Way in 1990, and has already sunk $6 million in "premium site costs," mostly in land purchase agreements with 17 different parties. Kennedy noted the dearth of retail home improvement in the', greater Woburn area. Customers currently have to travel to either Somerville to trie southeast, Waltham to the sbuthwest or Danvers to the nfrrth to find a Home Depot. And Home Depot has basically put most of the other large retailers out of business. ■ And, he emphasized the traffic improvements are more than just a Band-Aid. Kennedy said his plan would raise three intersections currently at a level of service of "F" (on the school grading scale) or "double F" to a "D" or "C." - State highway officials, who Sust approve any work on ishawum Road and Washing- ton Street, were enthusiastic enough to put Kennedy's proposal on a "fast track" for approval. Though, Kennedy noted, the state wouldn't allow apy curb cuts on Mishawum Road. I "It's a special procedure, a sbecial category," said Ken- nedy. "Only three projects Have been put on the fast track so far." There would be an outlet from the Citizens Bank lot to the Bertucci's lot, and then out toward the new traffic light on Commerce Way. "He's going to need some variances (from the Board of Appeals) even if he gets the special permit(s)," said Medeiros. "And emergency ac- cess to me is another issue. Like I said, I think it needs work." If all the city boards grant their approval, Kennedy hopes to begin construction in the fall. The Lowe's would open for business sometime next year. "This project is vital to the future of the city," said Ken- nedy. "There's going to be a dramatic increase in the traffic on Mishawum Road, Com- merce Way and Washington Street (due to the new interchange), and what I'm proposing will make the traffic flow."
