13 ANIMAL HEALTH REGULATIONS<br />

<strong>Cattle</strong> feedlots must con<strong>for</strong>m with regulations apply<strong>in</strong>g to cattle run under range conditions. The<br />

regulations under the various Acts are summarised below.<br />

13.1 Stock Act<br />

Primary Industries <strong>and</strong> Resources SA (PIRSA) approved Property Identification Code (PIC) tags,<br />

which <strong>in</strong>clude tail tags or ear tags, are required on all cattle which leave the property <strong>for</strong> sale or<br />

slaughter. <strong>Cattle</strong> which are held at the feedlot <strong>for</strong> 7 days or longer must be identified with the tail<br />

tag <strong>of</strong> the feedlot property.<br />

Veter<strong>in</strong>ary advice should be sought <strong>for</strong> unaccountable sickness or deaths to prevent excessive<br />

losses. Some diseases are legally notifiable.<br />

With the eradication <strong>of</strong> tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> brucellosis the Stock Act places no other day to day<br />

requirements on management.<br />

13.2 Agricultural Chemicals<br />

Veter<strong>in</strong>ary chemicals, vacc<strong>in</strong>es, antibiotics, <strong>and</strong> feed supplements conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g drugs have to be<br />

used as <strong>in</strong>structed or under veter<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />

For cattle to be sold as eligible <strong>for</strong> the European Union (EU) market, they must never have been<br />

treated with hormone growth promotants (HGP) at any time <strong>in</strong> their lives. The penalty <strong>for</strong> false<br />

declarations regard<strong>in</strong>g HGP status are substantial.<br />

If feedlot operators wish to sell their cattle as EU eligible, they must -<br />

Obta<strong>in</strong> a valid HGP declaration from the vendor when buy<strong>in</strong>g stock.<br />

Have a satisfactory system <strong>in</strong> place (e.g. a colour coded eartag system) to ensure the<br />

identity <strong>of</strong> those stock throughout their period with<strong>in</strong> the feedlot, so that a similar<br />

declaration can be safely made when the stock are f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>and</strong> sold <strong>for</strong> slaughter.<br />

When cattle are sold through a saleyard system <strong>and</strong> declared EU eligible, they must also be<br />

identified with p<strong>in</strong>k HGP-free property tailtags. P<strong>in</strong>k HGP-free tailtags are obta<strong>in</strong>ed by the same<br />

order<strong>in</strong>g process as are conventional white tailtags but require that a declaration on the order <strong>for</strong>m<br />

be signed such that the p<strong>in</strong>k HGP free tail tags will only applied to cattle which it is known have<br />

never been treated with HGP's at any time <strong>in</strong> their life.<br />

Like any other cattle producer, feedlot operators wish<strong>in</strong>g to use HGP's have certa<strong>in</strong><br />

responsibilities-<br />

When purchas<strong>in</strong>g HGP's they must complete a Purchaser Declaration provided by the<br />

registered HGP retailer.<br />

They must permanently identify all HGP treated cattle/buffalo with the prescribed triangular<br />

ear mark at the time <strong>of</strong> implantation.<br />

They must keep records <strong>of</strong> all HGP's purchased, used, stored on property or given away.<br />

They must keep records <strong>of</strong> all HGP-treated cattle/buffalo purchased, sold or kept on the<br />

property.<br />

The ear mark can be applied to either ear <strong>and</strong> punches <strong>for</strong> the purpose can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from<br />

registered HGP retailers. The records required must be kept <strong>for</strong> 2 years.<br />
