A thick layer of slag covered a large part of the room around the cupola furnace. These grates and panels are pieces from cast iron stoves made at the foundry. 41 Firebricks, made to withstand temperatures as high as 2,700°F, were abundant at the site. This firebrick was used to line the smelting furnace.
A tapper (left) from the Highland Foundry site was used in preparing sand molds. Identical tappers (right) were in use at the Portland Stove Foundry in 1980. The archaeology of the Highland Foundry revealed a story of change and continuity. The foundry was established during a time when Roxbury changed seemingly overnight from a rural town to an industrial city. The business adapted to changes in its environment—the taming of Stoney Brook and expansion of Columbus Avenue. It tailored its products to 42 consumer needs for kitchen and heating technology, specifically cast iron cooking stoves and furnaces, using manufacturing methods and tools still in use today. When consumers turned to new kinds of products, the business vanished, its story left behind in old patents, deeds, maps, and an archaeological site.
