If you would like to learn more about <strong>the</strong> archaeology <strong>of</strong><br />
Massachusetts, <strong>the</strong>re are several places to begin.<br />
A good introduction to <strong>the</strong> ancient Native American peoples <strong>of</strong><br />
Massachusetts is <strong>the</strong> book<br />
titled: The First Peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Nor<strong>the</strong>ast, written by Es<strong>the</strong>r K.<br />
Braun <strong>and</strong> David P. Braun,<br />
published by Moccasin Hill<br />
Press in 1994. This is an<br />
excellent introduction to <strong>the</strong><br />
archaeology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region for<br />
<strong>the</strong> non-archaeologist.<br />
If you are interested in <strong>the</strong> archaeology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industrial<br />
revolution, Living on <strong>the</strong> Boott tells <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
archaeology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mills <strong>of</strong> Lowell,<br />
Massachusetts, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />
textile manufacturing centers in <strong>the</strong><br />
United States. The book was written<br />
by Stephen A. Mrozowski, Mary C.<br />
Beaudry, <strong>and</strong> Grace H. Ziesing <strong>and</strong> is<br />
published by <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />
Massachusetts Press.<br />

If you would like to learn more<br />
about how archaeology is done,<br />
<strong>the</strong>re are many excellent collegelevel<br />
textbooks on archaeological<br />
methods. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best, in my<br />
opinion, is Linking to <strong>the</strong> Past by<br />
Kenneth L. Feder, published by<br />
Oxford University Press in 2008.<br />
It is an engaging read <strong>and</strong> draws<br />
many examples from New<br />
Engl<strong>and</strong> archaeology.<br />
The Massachusetts Archaeological<br />

Bulletin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts<br />
Archaeological Society, operates<br />
<strong>the</strong> Robbins Museum located in<br />
Middleborough, hosts conferences<br />
<strong>and</strong> presentations, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers opportunities to participate in<br />
archaeological excavations. There are several local chapters<br />
