112 Maurice Rutherford Second Thoughts Perhaps there is a positive response I could have made: think of how Dickens walked the paths of London and its waterfront compiling his cartography of lanes and lives in poverty, the griefs and joys of folk whose patois separated them from others of their ilk six streets away; their trades or occupations and the smells that advertised which workplace turned out what. So when in 1858 he came to read in Hull, would he not also walk our wharfs and alleyways? Why, yes, of course!
