Westmont Park District Senior Newsletter (630) 969-8080 www.wpd4fun.org
It seems the winter chill has finally arrived. Gloves and scarves will be the
dress code for the next few months! With the holidays just around the
corner, it is a very busy time around the park district. We have already
decorated for the annual Holly Days Festival and are making plans to
welcome the new year. Thinking back to warmer days and the many trips
and programs we have had, I can only say this has been a year full of fun
and adventure with lots of great people. Thank you for sharing time with us.
We hope you had as much fun as we did!
Just because it is cold outside, doesn’t mean you should hibernate! Winter is
a beautiful season with a whole variety of unique opportunities. We have
planned some great adventures for you that are perfect for beating the winter
blues. Bring a friend and get ready for some wonderful theater productions,
viewing Eagles, hitting the jackpot and enjoying some new restaurants. Stay
in shape with our Walking Club or Sit & Be Fit class. Don’t forget about
Monday Movies and monthly book reviews. We’ll keep you warm and happy
this winter! As always, I invite you to stop by and share your comments and
suggestions. Have a wonderful holiday season. We’ll see you at the Senior
Center in 2013!
There’s something almost magical about hanging up that brand new calendar
on the wall come January 1 st . Its twelve unwritten pages of yet to be
determined activities that will define our lives for the upcoming year.
Appointments, parties, meetings, and luncheons , will eventually fall into
their rightful space, along with the times and notes each holding a story or
memory all of its own.
Will your calendar have some of our wonderful programs in it? Can we fit into
your busy life, somewhere within its pages? Write us in for some awesome
trips, an afternoon movie, bridge or bingo, classes or chorus. It’s all here,
waiting for you to mark it down in your brand new calendar. Wishing each of
you a Happy and Healthy New Year!
Let the writing begin!
We are sponsored by the Westmont Park District; therefore,
Westmont residents are contributing part of their tax dollars
to the Park District. This is the reason residents have
priority in program registration. Everyone, regardless of
residence, is welcome at our programs; however, there is an
extra charge for non-residents.
We will make every attempt to refund money whenever
possible. Trips that require pre-payment will be
non-refundable unless a replacement for your space can be
found, either by you or by us. The actual refund will not be
processed until after the date of the trip. If the Park District
cancels the trip, you will always be refunded.
When you register for any Park District event, class or trip,
you are asked to sign a waiver. Basically, what you are
doing when you sign the waiver is releasing all claims for
injuries which might possibly be sustained while participating
in a Park District program. What it means for you is that
unless you sign the waiver, attendance at the program will
be denied.
Our newsletter, “Young at Heart”, is published 3 times a
year. Forms are available at the registration desk or at the
Senior Center. Residents are asked to pay a $6/year fee.
The non-resident rate is $9/year. All subscriptions run from
January - December. Please remember that the fee is to
help with mailing costs. You are welcome to pick up the
newsletter at The Community Center, 75 E. Richmond St.,
free of charge.

PICKLEBALL— COMING SOON!
Page 15
Young at Heart
This may appear like a brand of pickle, but in fact it is a fun game invented
in 1965. It’s a little like badminton, a little like table tennis and a little like
tennis. And it’s named after a dog! Pickleball is played with a paddle and
a wiffle ball on a small badminton sized court with a 34 inch net low to the
ground. The racquet is held low and the ball is allowed to bounce. The
game is quick so everyone gets a chance to play. First team to score 11
points wins. The rules are short and simple. You’ll learn what it means to
“step into the kitchen”! The racquets and balls are light weight, so don’t
worry about tennis elbow or injuring that rotator cuff!
This game is becoming the fastest growing sport for active older adults
and we want to be in on it!! We will be hosting an introductory class in late
No experience required. We’ll supply the equipment.
Below is the brief history of the sport:
Pickleball came into existence as a result of the combined efforts of
Joel Pritchard (a US Congressman), William Bell, and Barney
McCallum. In the summer of 1965, these co-inventors of pickleball
developed the game to entertain their families, who were getting
bored with nothing much to do. The basic idea of playing badminton
on Pritchard's badminton court had to be shelved owing to the lack
of a shuttlecock. This prompted the trio to use a ball, and thus began
the crude version of pickleball. The name was derived from the name of Pritchard's family dog
- Pickle, who had a tendency of chasing the errant balls and hiding in the bushes. With time,
the popularity of the sport just increased. In 1972, an organization was formed to protect the
interests of this new sport. The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) was formed in 1984. The
sport is surely high on the fun quotient, and going by the current trends, it is not difficult to
predict a bright future for one of the youngest racket sport of the world.

Bleacher Bums
PVPN is proud to present “Bleacher Bums,” the comedy about everything,
including baseball! In the bleachers at Chicago's Wrigley Field, die
hard Cub fans root for their team. The group includes a rabid cheerleader,
a blind man who follows the game by transistor radio and does his
own play by play, a bathing beauty, a nerd and various other bleacher
denizens. As the game proceeds, they bet among themselves on every
conceivable event, go out for frosty malts or beers, try to pick up the
bathing beauty and, occasionally, watch the game. The Cubs inevitably
blow it in the ninth and the villainous Marvin, who always bets against the
Cubs, figuring he can't lose, cleans up. The bleacher bums remain
undaunted they will be back tomorrow to root for the home team. Whether
you like or dislike the Cubs, one thing is for sure, you will love the
For Your
Information
Important Information Regarding
Physical Activity on our Trips
Page 25
Young at Heart
At the end of the description of the trip, you will find either ‘light, moderate or
heavy’ physical activity plus some information on whether or not stairs are
involved. What we are trying to convey to you is the amount of walking on the
particular trip, including stairs so you can more accurately judge for yourself if
this is the appropriate outing for you.
All of our trips are older, adult-oriented...we do not offer any triathlons! However,
everyone has varying degrees of operational physical skills. For example, a
theatre trip would be ‘light’ physical activity whereas a baseball game would be
‘heavy.’ If you ever need more information regarding physical activity on a
trip, please call Alice at (630) 969-8080 ext. 104.
On the same subject of physical activity, please ALWAYS let us know beforehand
if you will be needing 1-on-1 attention, and we will provide for more than 1
escort. If you do not let us know before, we may not be able to provide you with
the appropriate attention, since not all of our trips are escorted by two persons.
Important Parking Information
If you have handicapped license plates or the handicapped
card in your car, and you are going to park in one of our
lots for a trip 4 hours or more, please use a space as close
as possible to the building but kindly leave the
handicapped spots open. We ask this out of consideration
for others who may need the spot just for a short time. We appreciate it!
When attending a day trip, please use the parking lot on the east side of
The Community Center. This is the building from which the bus departs at
75 E. Richmond St.

WALLY’S CAFÉ at APPLE HOLLER
Page 32
Young at Heart
Don’t miss this wonderful, fun-filled comedy once
hailed “The best comic explosion you’ll see on
Broadway.” WALLY’S CAFE revolves around a
married couple running a roadside diner near
Las Vegas. The story starts in 1940 when we meet their only customer (so it
seems), a footsore Midwestern girl hitchhiking her way to Hollywood and movie
stardom. By 1958 the girl is serving as a waitress in the cafe after a disastrous
stay in Tinseltown, and finally, it’s 1981, 41 years after their first meeting. Funny
and touching, Rita Moreno, James Coco, and Sally Struthers once starred in this
feel good comedy about love, struggle, and friendship. Before this fabulous
theater performance, we will enjoy a delicious, hearty full course meal with
dessert and a beverage. There will also be time to visit Apple Holler’s Country
