Westmont Park District Senior Newsletter (630) 969-8080 www.wpd4fun.org
Hello warmth and sunshine! It‟s time to gather your friends and
neighbors and get into the spirit of summer. Our summer schedule is
packed with a variety of activities and programs designed just for you.
Some trips are close to home and others take us to the Wisconsin or
Indiana countryside. Boats, trolleys, baseball and lots of adventure
and fun---come out and play! Be sure to sign up early so we can meet
our minimums and not have to cancel. In addition to the activities
listed in the Young At Heart Newsletter, there are many other great
park district and museum programs to participate in. Don‟t forget to
come out to one of our June concerts at the beautiful Ty Warner Park
or the annual Fourth of July Celebration! We have the most
spectacular fireworks in the area.
As always, I invite you to stop by and give us your suggestions and
comments. We like to hear about new places to go, fun things to try
and how we can better serve you.
See you around the park!
~Alice
Yeah! Summer‟s here! With it brings many opportunities to be outside.
We get to see nature at its best. Whether you like taking a leisurely
stroll, getting your hands dirty in the garden, feeling the warm breezes
blowing at sundown, playing a round of golf, or smelling the fresh cut
grass, our senses awaken when the temperature rises. What about
watching an exciting baseball game at the ballpark? Or, listening to an
outdoor concert as the world drifts by. Summer also means delicious
food, barbeques, corn on the cob, hamburgers, brats, ice cream and
homemade salads. When family and friends surround you on a
beautiful summer day- there‟s nothing better. We have a red-hot lineup
for you to choose from this season. There‟s all kinds
of things to see and do. It‟s just waiting for you. So,
register today and join us at Westmont Park District-
Program
Fees
We are sponsored by the Westmont Park District; therefore,
Westmont residents are contributing part of their tax dollars
to the Park District. This is the reason residents have
priority in program registration. Everyone, regardless of
residence, is welcome at our programs; however, there is an
extra charge for non-residents.
Refunds
We will make every attempt to refund money whenever
possible. Trips that require pre-payment will be
non-refundable unless a replacement for your space can be
found, either by you or by us. The actual refund will not be
processed until after the date of the trip. If the Park District
cancels the trip, you will always be refunded.
Waiver
Policy
When you register for any Park District event, class or trip,
you are asked to sign a waiver. Basically, what you are
doing when you sign the waiver is releasing all claims for
injuries which might possibly be sustained while participating
in a Park District program. What it means for you is that
unless you sign the waiver, attendance at the program will
be denied.
Newsletter
Our newsletter, “Young at Heart”, is published 3 times a
year. Forms are available at the registration desk or at the
Senior Center. Residents are asked to pay a $3/year fee.
The non-resident rate is $6/year. All subscriptions run from
January - December. Please remember that the fee is to
help with mailing costs. You are welcome to pick up the
newsletter at The Community Center, 75 E. Richmond St.,
Information
Important Information Regarding
Physical Activity on our Trips
At the end of the description of the trip, you will find either „light, moderate or heavy‟
physical activity plus some information on whether or not stairs are involved. What we
are trying to convey to you is the amount of walking on the particular trip, including
stairs so you can more accurately judge for yourself if this is the appropriate outing for
you.
All of our trips are older, adult-oriented...we do not offer any triathlons! However,
everyone has varying degrees of operational physical skills. For example, a theatre
trip would be „light‟ physical activity whereas a baseball game would be „heavy.‟ If you
ever need more information regarding physical activity on a trip, please call
Alice at (630) 969-8080 ext. 104.
On the same subject of physical activity, please ALWAYS let us know beforehand if
you will be needing 1-on-1 attention, and we will provide for more than 1 escort. If you
do not let us know before, we may not be able to provide you with the appropriate
attention, since not all of our trips are escorted by two persons.
Important Parking Information
If you have handicapped license plates or the handicapped
card in your car, and you are going to park in one of our lots for
a trip 4 hours or more, please use a space as close as possible
to the building but kindly leave the handicapped spots open.
We ask this out of consideration for others who may need the
spot just for a short time. We appreciate it!
When attending a day trip, please use the parking lot either on the east side or west
side of The Community Center. This is the building from which the bus departs at
75 E. Richmond St.

Shipshewana & quilt gardens
We have a full day planned for you in the heart of Amish country in Indiana.
Our day begins at Shipshewana where you will have time to browse and shop
at the Midwest‟s largest flea market. You will find hundreds of vendors selling
everything from fruit to hand-crafted furniture. Take time for lunch on your own
at one of the many eateries on the grounds. Next, we will take a tour of the Quilt
Gardens along the back roads of the Amish countryside. Our step-on guide will
tell us about the 16 gardens and murals in seven different communities that are
splendid quilt patterns with original designs. It is an absolute must to experience
Did you know we have a Viking ship in Geneva, IL? Our day begins at Good
Templar Park where we will meet the Friends of the Viking Ship for a guided
Great Lakes). The ship is one of the 10 most endangered landmarks in Illinois.
After our Viking adventure, we will have lunch in the Atrium Café at The Little
Traveler. You will have time after lunch to shop or just take a leisurely stroll in
Wedding singer at the armory
For the very first time we are traveling to the Armory in Janesville, Wisconsin for
a fun musical comedy --The Wedding Singer! This is a hilarious tale of a
wannabe rock-star who is New Jersey‟s favorite wedding singer. He‟s the life of
the party until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Devastated, he makes
every wedding as disastrous as his own.
The Armory, built in the 1930‟s, features stunning brickwork, terrazzo floors and
decorative ironwork. It served as a mustering center for soldiers during WWII
and has now been turned into a state-of-the-art dinner theater. Before the
show, we will be treated to an exquisite three course lunch featuring soup or
salad, choice of entrée, dessert and a beverage. Very seldom do we get to
select directly the chef‟s menu on the day of our trip. Today will be a treat as we
will be able to select from fresh poultry, fish, pork or vegetarian dishes. Don‟t
miss today‟s new adventure!
