.WEAVER: His Wembley run created an instant City legend
Yes, I admit I’m wearing a very heavy shade of blue tinted
glasses but I reckon I’m not alone in my fondest for this team.
Thousands of other blues hold many of our heroes that day in
highest esteem, even enough to match our legendary heroes of
the late 60’s.
1999 made legends of Horlock, Dickov and Weaver for their on
the day heroics. 1999 was also the year the one and only Shaun
Goater began his journey from striking leper to striking legend.
Bagging over 20 goals in 1999 Goater spearheaded our attack
with great support from the hornet-like Dickov up front.
1999 was also the year that a proper hardman joined the club.
No I’m not referring to Jamie Pollock, much as he thought he
was, I’m referencing the one and only Andy Morrison. A born
leader who would take no prisoners. It was just what a weak
willed City team needed at a time when everyone around the
club was looking for leadership.
Then there was a young Terry Cooke. Bought in January from
them, he had a tough crowd to please. But please he did. Seven
goals and numerous assists sky-rocketed City in third place, just
being pipped to automatic promotion by Walsall.
This book is a celebration of those Wembley ‘99 heroes 10 years
on. What follows are real fans recollections of that day and what
it meant to them.
Thanks to those fans who took the time to contribute and thanks
to the players of Wembley ‘99 for providing the most dramatic
football match of my supporting career.
