92 Super Kev, Super Kevin Horlock struck a fearsome drive into the net and the City end went berserk. Could it happen? We all thought. Well it is City after all. So I wandered back down the steps and stood halfway between the tunnel and my seat. I think I held my breath after Horlock scored as I was feeling elated and petrified at the same time. Time seemed to go on forever and every time Mark Halsey looked at his watch I felt nauseous. Then the little jack russell fella, that is the legend "PAUL DICKOV" popped up with a fantastic strike that sent all city fans into raptures, I did, what can only be described as a "Triple Axel Somersault With A Half Pipe Twist" into the nearest row of blues to where I was stood. We all went ballistic for what seemed like 5 minutes. The city end was rocking, I was losing my voice I was screaming so loudly. This strange liquidy substance was now flowing freely from my eyes and I was in love with my team once again. I looked around to try and take everything in. I have no idea how many blues left the stadium and missed Dickov's equaliser but there seemed to be hundreds running back into the stadium to re-take their seats. Then after the full time whistle was blown by Mr Halsey " LEGEND". All blues settled down for very nervy 30 minutes of Extra Time. I cannot
ecall much of what happened in extra time. In fact my main memory is about Cigarettes! I was a smoker at the time and this is at a time when you were allowed to smoke in your seat. I remember going through 10 cigarettes in the 30 minutes of extra time. Well I always said City would be the death of me!! Extra time came to a close and penalties were now between us and promotion. I can honestly say that I wasn't this nervous before losing my virginity. Once under way though, the penalty shootout nerves were soon gone as we were first up to take the spot kick and our boys did us proud, Horlock scores for City 1-0, Weaver dives to save from Smith 1-0, the our hero Paul Dickov steps up and hits the post!!! I am sure he did it on purpose as the Gillingham Keeper Vince Bartram was Dickov's best man at his wedding. This meant the score stayed 1-0 and Gillingham were up next and could level it. However, Pennock misses by a mile, still 1-0. Up steps Terry Cooke, scores for City 2-0. Then Hodge scores for Gillingham 2-1, next Edgehill sends the keeper the wrong way 3-1. We were there, I was sure of it. COME ON WEAVER I shouted as we all sang ENGLANDS, ENGLANDS NUMBER 1, ENGLANDS NUMBER 1. HE ONLY BLOODY WELL DID IT, Weaver saves from Butters and City are promoted!! By this time I was a crazed 93
