Special Olympics
BY MATTHEW LOW| DIVISION 5 | CLOVIS NORTH
This month, Clovis North High School
successfully hosted its annual Special
Olympics over at its home track. Special
Olympics is a school event where
mentally disabled students are able to
participate in exhilarating Olympic style
events hosted by the school. It is
typically held once a year and is a great
opportunity for student volunteers, like
key clubbers, to help the school
community. The reason for hosting the
Special Olympics is to provide disabled
students with the rare, fun chance to
engage in exciting sports that they are
usually unable to participate in. Even for
Kelly Day
C o m m o n l y
known as LTG
Day, Lieutenant
Governor Day is
a d a y
dedicated to
c e l e b r a t i n g
a n d
appreciating
the Lieutenant Governor. Members from
both Kapa'a High School Key Club and
Kauai High School Key Club gathered to
partake in "Kelly Day" in honor of our
Lieutenant Governor, Kelly Soares. Before
the festivities began, members from both
clubs met at Lydgate Beach to help remove
one thousand pounds of driftwood and
garbage from the waters. Members then
met up at Kauai High School where they
were divided into teams and took part in fun
ice breakers and heard many inspirational
words from guest speakers. They also
participated in service projects such as
painting banners, packing cards from the
Kauai Food Bank, and designing and
decorating donation boxes to be used in a
later service project. They then enjoyed a
good laugh and some fun entertainment by
creating and presenting skits. The friends,
fun, love, laughs, and memories will never be
forgotten by the members who spent a day
with the LTG of Division 22.
those who are disabled, everyone
should be given the chance to have
some fun playing sports! Every year
over 50 excited Clovis North key
clubbers will volunteer precious time
out of their busy school schedules to
help pack lunches for these special
education students, from anywhere
between 1 – 3 hours. This month, all
the lunches key clubbers carefully
packed were appreciatively (and
very gladly) eaten by the special
education kids. Clovis North key
clubbers greatly enjoyed providing
assistance to all the special
education kids and putting a smile on
many of their faces. A smile that does
not necessarily appear all the time for
Piedmont Harvest Festival
BY TAYLOR CHOW| DIVISION 2 | PIEDMONT
Piedmont’s annual Harvest Festival
at the Piedmont Community
Center.
Imagine a long parking lot full of
tables and canopies. Children of
every age running everywhere with
smudged sunscreen marks still
visible on their skin. All you can
hear is the laughter of children and
their parents mingling with other
families. You can smell the
sweetness of the fresh cakes as you
walk by the cakewalk. You can
feel the hot sun beating down on
your skin. As you walk further you
can almost taste the burgers
cooking on the grill.
The Harvest Festival is an event in
Piedmont where kids get to enjoy
playing carnival games such as
balloon darts, participate in the
cakewalk and much more. Kids
many of these physically and
mentally challenged kids. During the
Special Olympics, all the key clubbers
who helped out were thrilled to see
the special education kids having a
blast in the various events that took
place on the track: the thrill on each
of their faces was priceless. In
addition, key clubbers had a great
chance to socialize and get to know
each other better in detail. Overall,
the Special Olympics at Clovis North
this year was successful once again,
and Clovis North’s key clubbers had
another awesome time volunteering
while also making an impact within
the school community.
can participate in small craft
projects like decorating a mini
pumpkin. Families get to look at
all the unique scarecrows made
by elementary school classes.
There’s also a live band in the
park for people to relax and
enjoy the day.
This yea r , Ke y C lub bers
volunteered at the food station
serving food to the many families
that were at the festival. Allyson
Chan worked behind the scenes
by helping prepare the plates,
while Jonathan Khuu and Jamie
Chow helped serve salads to the
customers who opted for a lighter
meal. On the other end of the
table, Taylor Chow helped serve
hot dogs, hamburgers and other
foods to the long line of families.
Whether one was volunteering or
just hanging out with friends, the
Harvest Festival was a lot of fun
