<strong>The</strong> History Museum is housed <strong>in</strong>side the historic<br />
1910 County Courthouse. Over 50,000 people<br />
visit the museum each year, and the number of<br />
local residents who hold memberships is grow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>The</strong> History Museum teaches approximately<br />
14,000 children each year through the on- and<br />
off-site programs. <strong>The</strong> museum houses the<br />
research library and archives that currently hold<br />
over 100,000 photographs, pr<strong>in</strong>ts, books and<br />
documents collected by the San Mateo County<br />
Historical Association.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Great Rotunda. <strong>The</strong><br />
sta<strong>in</strong>ed-glass dome of<br />
the rotunda, thought to<br />
be the largest <strong>in</strong> a Pacific<br />
Coast public build<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
is the architectural<br />
highlight of the museum<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Courtroom A. <strong>The</strong> oldest<br />
courtroom <strong>in</strong> San Mateo<br />
County has been restored<br />
to its appearance <strong>in</strong> 1910.<br />
Nature’s Bounty. This<br />
exhibit gallery explores<br />
how the earliest people<br />
of the Pen<strong>in</strong>sula used<br />
the natural resources of<br />
the area and how those<br />
resources were used to<br />
help build San Francisco<br />
after the discovery of<br />
gold <strong>in</strong> 1849.<br />
Journey to Work. This<br />
exhibit gallery shows<br />
how transportation<br />
transformed San Mateo<br />
County from a frontier<br />
to suburbs.<br />

Politics, Crime and<br />
Law Enforcement. <strong>The</strong><br />
Atk<strong>in</strong>son Meet<strong>in</strong>g Room <strong>in</strong>cludes the Walter Moore<br />
Law Enforcement Collection of historic badges.<br />
San Mateo County History Makers:<br />
Entrepreneurs Who Changed the World. <strong>The</strong><br />
exhibit chronicles the entrepreneurs who made<br />
San Mateo County <strong>in</strong>ternationally known.<br />
Visitors are <strong>in</strong>vited to review biographies of such<br />
<strong>in</strong>novators as A.P. Giann<strong>in</strong>i (who created the<br />
Bank of America and lived <strong>in</strong> San Mateo) and<br />
other entrepreneurs whose <strong>in</strong>novations have left a<br />
substantial impact.<br />
Land of Opportunity: <strong>The</strong> Immigrant Experience<br />
<strong>in</strong> San Mateo County. <strong>The</strong> exhibit tells the stories<br />
of the diverse people who came to the area and<br />
highlights the experiences of early immigrant<br />
groups of the late 1800s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese,<br />
Japanese, Irish, Italians and Portuguese.<br />
Liv<strong>in</strong>g the California Dream. <strong>The</strong> exhibit depicts<br />
the development of the suburban culture of San<br />
Mateo County.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Celtic Tiger: <strong>The</strong> Irish Economic Miracle.<br />
<strong>The</strong> exhibit explores how the Bay Area has<br />
participated <strong>in</strong> Ireland’s current economic boom.<br />
Special Exhibits<br />
100-Year History of the Courthouse. Exhibition<br />
celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 1910<br />
County Courthouse (through Dec. 31).
