RESEARCH FOCUS
Joseph J. Ricotta MD Page 15 of 69
03/2008
Open and endovascular treatment of complex aortic and carotid disease with a particular focus on
fenestrated and branched endografts to treat thoraco-abdominal and complex aortic aneurysms by
endovascular means. Dr. Ricotta has dedicated much of his research to the treatment of complex aortic
aneurysms with fenestrated and branched endografts and to the treatment of carotid disease with carotid
endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting. In addition, Dr. Ricotta has two patents pending for new
devices in the field of fenestrated and branched endografts. In addition, he has been awarded a
Physician-Sponsored Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) by the FDA to study surgeon-modified
fenestrated and branched stent-grafts in high-risk patients with complex aortic aneurysms-
MO(dified)STE(nt)GRA(ft) TRIAL.
Another major area of research interest is the use of surgical simulators in vascular surgery training, with
a primary focus on identifying methods of objective assessment of competency for various open surgical
and endovascular procedures. Other research interests include: thoracic and abdominal aortic
aneurysms, aortic tumors, carotid body tumors and carotid and subclavian artery aneurysms, popliteal
artery aneurysms, endovascular treatment for peripheral arterial disease and critical limb ischemia, and
renal and mesenteric artery occlusive disease.
