Research Focus:
One of the greatest problems in the field of transplantation today is the shortage of donor
organs. My research interests include methods to increase the donor pool. “Expanded
criteria,” or “marginal” donor organs are being utilized in our program but selection
criteria must be further defined to ensure maximal utilization without compromising graft
and patient survival. Machine perfusion of kidneys is an accepted technology but perhaps
should be more broadly applied in our geographic location. Currently machine perfusion
is utilized for expanded criteria donor and donation after cardiac death organs in our
state.
Clinical Service Contributions:
Initiation in 1999 of the dual renal transplant program at Emory University, which
involves transplantation of both kidneys from expanded criteria donors into a single
recipient.
Initiation of a kidney machine perfusion program to increase the number of transplantable
kidneys in the State of Georgia (in progress).
Development of protocol to select patients for ABO incompatible renal transplants ( A2
to B blood group )
