Program Mission
To thoroughly educate Physician Assistants (PA) in
the disease processes of the Cardiothoracic
Surgical patient and to instruct the PA resident in
the technical skills and clinical acumen involved in
the care of their patients.
Program Vision
To become nationally recognized as the
preeminent PA post-graduate training program in
Cardiothoracic Surgery and to set the educational
standards by which similar programs are based.
Description of Program
The Emory PA Post-Graduate Cardiothoracic
Surgical Residency program, in affiliation with
Emory University PA Program, is a comprehensive
and intensive 1-year, certificate-granting program
offering both a clinical and a web-based didactic
educational curriculum in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
The program accepts two PA residents per year
and is designed to challenge the residents and
provide for an ideal environment in which to learn
the advanced skills and clinical acumen associated
with the care of the Cardiothoracic Surgical
patient. The residents will complete multiple
rotations through 3 Emory hospitals with available
electives in Critical Care, Aortic Surgery, Pediatric
Cardiothoracic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and
Heart & Lung Transplant.
Admission Requirements
1. Applicants must be graduates of an ARC-PA
accredited physician assistant program with a
minimum of a 3.2 overall GPA
2. Applicants must obtain Georgia licensure upon
acceptance into the program and undergo a preemployment
background check.
3. Applicants must be NCCPA eligible or certified.
New graduates accepted into the program are
required to pass the NCCPA certification
examination prior to matriculation, or shortly
thereafter.
4. Applicants must hold current Basic Life Support
(BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
certification.
5. Must demonstrate a sincere and well articulated
desire to enter Cardiothoracic Surgery.
