But to hope and peace a stranger,
In the battle's heat I 20,
Where, expos'd to ev'ry danger,
Some friendly ball will lay me low.
Then, mayhap, when homeward steering,
With the news my messmates come,
Even you, my story hearing,
With a sigh, may cry, poor Tom
GLEE.
Send home my long-stray'd eyes to me,
! ;
Which, oh! too long have dwelt on thee;
But if from you they've learnt such ill,
To sweetly smile,
And then beguile,
Keep the deceivers, keep them stilt.
Send back my harmless heart again.
Which no unworthy thought could stain
But if it has been taught by thine,
To forfeit both
Its word and oath,
Keep it, for then 'tis none of mine.
