Extraction techniques
Obtaining extracts from medicinal plants
Plant extracts are pharmaceutical/phyto pharmaceutical fluids, soft or dry,
obtained by solvent extraction of different plant products.
1. Discontinuous processes
• Maceration cold (17-22°C)
warm (40-60°C)
•Percolation
•Soxhlet extraction
•Infusion
•Decoction
•Fermented alcoholic extraction
•Continuous extraction with organic
solvents
•Accelerated solvent extraction(ASE)
•Microwave assisted extraction(MAE)
•Ultrasound-assisted extraction(UAE)
•Supercritical fluid exctraction(SCF)
2. Continuous processes: continuous extraction with organic solvents,
continuous precolation, Soxhlet extraction.
