VICE COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
It was great to participate in PYC’s Opening Day Ceremony, the Blessing
of the Fleet, and Sundowner Ceremony. It is a series of traditions worth
continuing. PYC in all of its splendor showcased its greatest asset,
the hospitality of the Membership. My Rotary Group Study Exchange
(GSE) Team from Milan and their host families were greeted warmly and
enthusiastically. The GSE team enjoyed all of the activities and the fi sh
fry. I want to personally thank those members who took aboard their
vessel some of the GSE team members and their host families for the Blessing of the Fleet.
Pier Marco Romagnoli, Silvia Aiello, Carl and Ingrid Backman joined Commodore
Roger Moraski and Betsy on board Jubilee. Jim and Linda Oyler entertained Davide
Belloni, Michela Fumagalli, Guy Gascard, Paul and Beverly Stanley on board their
sailboat Parley. On board Alafair with Johnny and Ruth Smith were Cristina Bianchi and
Tom Smith. Many thanks to all of you for making the GSE Team feel at home.
The landscape of PYC is beginning to show improvement thanks to the efforts of Susan
McKinnon, her Landscape Committee, and the PYC staff. Susan welcomes volunteers
just call her at 477-9951, and she will be happy to put you to work.
Halt the presses! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers takes action! Relax, nothing has
changed in the time line for the resolution PYC’s environmentally affected land. Apparently,
the Corps of Engineers needed to clear the land to better assess the next step for the
remediation. Sadly, Shay Jones our EPA Environmental Scientist/Project Manager is
moving on and being replaced by Peter (Pete) Thorpe. Pete is the fi fth replacement since
this effort has started. He has an undergraduate degree in environmental studies and a
Masters degree in geology. We can only hope he is a quick study and a man of action. The
saga never ends.
REAR COMMODORE/MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN
Please join me, in welcoming new member Rick Martin and his
partner Cindy Ott to the club. While they currently live in Texas, they
spend a lot of time here in the Pensacola area and they have owned
an assortment of boats over the years. Here is a bit of member history
I found fascinating: Member Dr. Don Rock delivered Rick’s daughter
in Subic Bay, Philippines in 1983 while they were both serving in the
U.S. Navy. Apparently there were some tense moments as the father,
Rick, anxiously awaited the arrival of the doctor, Don, as he and his wife,
Beverly, were sailing in from Taiwan on their new Tayana 37. Don did make it in on time and
Rick’s daughter was his 5,000th delivery! (Babies… not yachts.)
PYC INITIATION FEE INCREASE EFFECTIVE JULY 1
Active Voting Member $2,500 + tax
Active Duty Service Member $ 250 + tax
Clergy $ 500 + tax
Young adults 30-34 years $1,000 + tax
25-29 years $ 500 + tax
18-24 years $ 100 + tax
Young adults must convert to Active Voting Adult membership upon turning 35 years
old; their Active Voting Membership initiation fee will be billed at the fee in effect when they
upgrade, minus the amount of the initiation fee they’ve already paid.
In an effort to make the increased initiation fees more palatable, PYC will be offering the
following payment plans:
After July 1, 2009, new Active Voting Members will be required to remit 50% of
the initiation fee with their application and may elect to pay the remaining balance over the
following 12 months with their monthly statement.
Young Adult Members may elect to upgrade to Active Voting Membership prior to
July 1, 2009 by paying the current $1,500 initiation fee (minus their initial initiation fee of
$100) over 12 months. To take advantage of this option you must contact either Deon or
Jennifer in the club offi ce prior to July 1.
Young Adult Members upgrading to Active Voting Membership at age 35, or are
electing to do so early, after July 1, 2009, will be given the option of paying the $2,500
initiation fee (minus their initial initiation fee) over the following 12 months as well.
This means that NOW is the time to encourage your friends to join the club or upgrade
your current Young Adult membership before the new fees go into effect July1. Guest Night
is held on the fi rst Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm.
If you have any questions about the new initiation fee or introducing a potential new
member to the club, please do not hesitate to contact me at your convenience.
