COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
TIM BURR
The fi rst quarter of 2009 was overall a very good one at PYC. We had lots of varied,
well-attended activities both on and off the water. New initiatives brought members out in
force. As we analyze where we are and need to stay fi nancially, however, the conclusion
is inescapable that despite cutting costs and improving effi ciencies, we must revisit and
revive the dues increase initiative postponed from last Fall. The good news is that your
Treasurer and Board have come up with a way to balance our needs with some incentives
and restructuring all designed to build member use of the Club and greater member retention.
MONTHLY DUES INCREASE RECOMMENDED
The Board has voted to recommend for member approval at the May 14 General Membership Meeting, an
increase in dues from $100 per month to $145 per month, while reducing the charges for food and drinks
by 22% across the Board (excluding banquets). As part of that recommendation, we would also end the
requirement that members spend $75 per quarter at the Club.
As our Treasurer explains in greater detail in his column, that package of changes will allow us effectively
to support the current operating costs with dues, and give our members a strong, added incentive to use
the Club. The result will be a benefi t to members in many ways and mitigate against what otherwise would
be accurately viewed as simply a hefty percentage increase in dues. It’s true that we haven’t raised dues in
years, but if we were simply to raise dues, but less, and keep pricing the same, we would be poor stewards
of your Club in our view. Better not only to build a sound fi nancial footing, but also provide an additional
membership benefi t in the form of lower food and beverage costs.
INITIATION FEE INCREASE RECOMMENDED
We also have voted to increase the initiation fee for Active Members from $1,500 to $2,500 effective July
1, 2009. The cushion there is that we will collect half with the application, and allow the new member to pay
the other half over the following 12 months, if they choose. Members converting from young adult to active
status would be allowed to pay their initiation fee (whether $1,500 if before July 1 or $2,500 if after) over the
12 months following their conversion.
Overall, we hope that these changes and restructuring will be viewed as positive and proactive initiatives,
adding to our strength and stability for years to come. We welcome your feedback and input, as ever.
We have a lot to look forward to at PYC in May, not the least of which is our spectacular Mother’s Day
Brunch. Please make your reservations early so we can be sure to accommodate you in the dining room. I
look forward to seeing you at the Club.
PROPOSED MEMBERSHIP DUES INCREASE BY DAN SMITHSON, TREASURER
One reason to belong to a club is to be able
to have access to the club’s facilities, goods and
services at bargain prices.
My fellow members, the time has come for a dues
increase. However, just raising the dues won’t allow
us to reduce prices to bargain levels in the bar and
dining areas. In 2008 approximately $214,000 of
the ownership costs of the club were subsidized by
the costs charged for food and drinks.
The fi nance committee and the Board have looked
at this situation and have determined that now is
the time to set the club’s fi nances straight. This
requires two changes to be made simultaneously.
First: The ownership costs of the club should
be paid by through our dues. These costs, which
are approximately $145.00 per member, include
Property taxes, Insurance, Building and Grounds
maintenance, Offi ce Administration, etc.
Second: We want to lower the costs of food and
drinks an average of 22 percent and at the same
time discontinue the $75 quarterly minimum spending requirement.
It is our goal to make membership at PYC an obvious bargain and your “Restaurant of Choice” whenever you want
to go out to eat.
To see how these changes will affect you, put the data from your bill into the example worksheet above.
I will be glad to discuss these changes anytime but I will make sure to be available at the club on Thursday May 7.
VICE COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
It was great to participate in PYC’s Opening Day Ceremony, the Blessing
of the Fleet, and Sundowner Ceremony. It is a series of traditions worth
continuing. PYC in all of its splendor showcased its greatest asset,
the hospitality of the Membership. My Rotary Group Study Exchange
(GSE) Team from Milan and their host families were greeted warmly and
enthusiastically. The GSE team enjoyed all of the activities and the fi sh
fry. I want to personally thank those members who took aboard their
vessel some of the GSE team members and their host families for the Blessing of the Fleet.
Pier Marco Romagnoli, Silvia Aiello, Carl and Ingrid Backman joined Commodore
Roger Moraski and Betsy on board Jubilee. Jim and Linda Oyler entertained Davide
Belloni, Michela Fumagalli, Guy Gascard, Paul and Beverly Stanley on board their
sailboat Parley. On board Alafair with Johnny and Ruth Smith were Cristina Bianchi and
Tom Smith. Many thanks to all of you for making the GSE Team feel at home.
The landscape of PYC is beginning to show improvement thanks to the efforts of Susan
McKinnon, her Landscape Committee, and the PYC staff. Susan welcomes volunteers
just call her at 477-9951, and she will be happy to put you to work.
Halt the presses! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers takes action! Relax, nothing has
changed in the time line for the resolution PYC’s environmentally affected land. Apparently,
the Corps of Engineers needed to clear the land to better assess the next step for the
remediation. Sadly, Shay Jones our EPA Environmental Scientist/Project Manager is
moving on and being replaced by Peter (Pete) Thorpe. Pete is the fi fth replacement since
this effort has started. He has an undergraduate degree in environmental studies and a
Masters degree in geology. We can only hope he is a quick study and a man of action. The
saga never ends.
L. SCOTT HARRELL
REAR COMMODORE/MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN
Please join me, in welcoming new member Rick Martin and his
partner Cindy Ott to the club. While they currently live in Texas, they
spend a lot of time here in the Pensacola area and they have owned
an assortment of boats over the years. Here is a bit of member history
I found fascinating: Member Dr. Don Rock delivered Rick’s daughter
in Subic Bay, Philippines in 1983 while they were both serving in the
U.S. Navy. Apparently there were some tense moments as the father,
Rick, anxiously awaited the arrival of the doctor, Don, as he and his wife,
Beverly, were sailing in from Taiwan on their new Tayana 37. Don did make it in on time and
Rick’s daughter was his 5,000th delivery! (Babies… not yachts.)
PYC INITIATION FEE INCREASE EFFECTIVE JULY 1
Active Voting Member $2,500 + tax
Active Duty Service Member $ 250 + tax
Clergy $ 500 + tax
Young adults 30-34 years $1,000 + tax
25-29 years $ 500 + tax
18-24 years $ 100 + tax
Young adults must convert to Active Voting Adult membership upon turning 35 years
old; their Active Voting Membership initiation fee will be billed at the fee in effect when they
upgrade, minus the amount of the initiation fee they’ve already paid.
In an effort to make the increased initiation fees more palatable, PYC will be offering the
following payment plans:
After July 1, 2009, new Active Voting Members will be required to remit 50% of
the initiation fee with their application and may elect to pay the remaining balance over the
following 12 months with their monthly statement.
Young Adult Members may elect to upgrade to Active Voting Membership prior to
July 1, 2009 by paying the current $1,500 initiation fee (minus their initial initiation fee of
$100) over 12 months. To take advantage of this option you must contact either Deon or
Jennifer in the club offi ce prior to July 1.
Young Adult Members upgrading to Active Voting Membership at age 35, or are
electing to do so early, after July 1, 2009, will be given the option of paying the $2,500
initiation fee (minus their initial initiation fee) over the following 12 months as well.
This means that NOW is the time to encourage your friends to join the club or upgrade
your current Young Adult membership before the new fees go into effect July1. Guest Night
is held on the fi rst Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm.
If you have any questions about the new initiation fee or introducing a potential new
member to the club, please do not hesitate to contact me at your convenience.
HOSPITALITY
Every family has traditions and events that they
repeat year after year. These traditions give us all
a sense of place and community. There is no better
place than PYC to create family memories and enjoy
special occasions. In fact now you will receive a free
meal at PYC to help celebrate your birthday!
Wasn’t the Opening Day and Blessing of the Fleet a wonderful Club event!! The PYC
Fleet Judges Gwen Herrin, Ann Pleune, Marguerite Burr, Page Lee, Nancy Matthews,
& Kim Hamilton had a tough job reviewing the “decked out” boats during the boat parade
as they selected the best decorated boats in sail and motor categories for trophies.
Congratulations to all who participated and the creative winners! It was truly a memorable
PYC event.
The April Cruising into Spring Ladies Fashion Show Luncheon featured fabulous fashions
from Linda Merting’s Ladies Quarter Boutique. Our PYC models, Marguerite Burr,
Wendi Fairchild, Lyn Harrison, Kathleen Logan, Pam Mitchell, Ruth Nurnberger,
Pat Remke, Diane Robbins, & Cameron Smith looked stunning in the latest fashions.
Commodore Tim Burr and Commodore Ronald Bray were handsome escorts for the
models. Co-Chairs Quinlyn Bray and Jean Fleege thank Fr. Jack Gray for leading the
prayer, Linda Whitman for doing the door prizes, Millie Cascone and Ann Owczarczak
for handing out tickets, and PYC Chef Daro and the staff for the wonderful luncheon and
service.
Summer is around the corner! Drinks on the PYC deck watching the sun go down is
the best way to end your day anytime of the year, but particularly nice in the Spring. Also
the pool opens and the Water Aerobics Ladies are working it out in the deep end of the
pool every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday at 9am. It is great fun, no sign up, just show up
and join the class. Bring a noodle if you don’t have those cute little booties that help you
fl oat.
AS THE TILLER TURNS
We are happy to report that Pat Eldridge is recovering nicely from injuries due to recent
fall. Her visiting Nurse Nancy Matthews is making sure Pat and Winn have wonderful
meals and Pat’s favorite bottled water to assist in her recovery.
Our sincere sympathies go out to PYC member Terry Bryan who recently lost the love
of his life, his wife and companion of 28 years, Rose Mary.
We wish to congratulate PYC Members, VADM & Mrs. Timothy Wright (Tim & Dixie)
who celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary last month.
Last month PYC members, Jere & Karen Allan, Roger & Betsy Moraski, & Mike
& Sharon Pettit enjoyed cruisin’ together on a BIG boat. Rumor has it that Betsy won
$2,000 and Mike won $100. We wonder what Cruise Line they booked? Betsy was later
seen skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado with Marguerite Burr. Don’t think Roger got any
of that loot!
Recently Larry & Ann-Marie Bowyer left Paradise and made a quick trip back to
Pensacola. We all enjoyed seeing them around the Club and hearing about all their
wonderful adventures. They have excellent tips on squeezing 8 people on their boat for a
week of fun in the islands. Their daughter Christa’s family joined them for Spring Break!
Not sure if it was a break for Grandpa and Grandma.
Other cruising couples away from the bay, Ron & Joanne Bruce are in Scarborough,
Australia. Scarborough is a small coastal city with a nice marina near Brisbane. Everything
is within bicycle range. They took a brief land trip to Hobart, Tasmania. The weather, the
mountains, the sea, and wildlife were magnifi cent. They also toured the wine country
north of Adelaide and the city of Sydney. Now they are getting ready to sail north then
west to Darwin and will pass inside the Great Barrier Reef. Ron reports “There are several
boats here that we have sailed with in various parts of this great adventure extending back
as far as Isla Mujeres, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The cruising community is huge.”
Gwen Herrin’s son-in-law, Weldon Holcombe participated in his company’s invitation
to ring the opening bell at the NYC stock exchange Tuesday, April 21, which was televised.
He commented, “Afterwards touring the Stock Exchange was extremely interesting.”
Many of you know that I have been battling colon cancer for the last several months.
The latest news that I have received is that the doctors are very optimistic the cancer
is now gone. I will know more after a few more tests. I will return to work, as I am able. I
want to thank all of you who kept me, and my my family in your prayers. The cards and the
phone calls also meant a great deal to me. I look forward to seeing you all around the
club!
Congratulations to Paul & Rachael Gillette who
took Atlantic Union to the Maxine Championship
Win. It was also nice to have Doug Samson there
to help present the trophy, which was named for his
mother. Good racing by Triptonite and Radio Flyer in
Spinnaker A, with Mike Beard in Kanaloa winning the Spinnaker B
Class. The Non Spinnaker Class Maxine Trophy was won by Sunset
Raider with Tom Elliot’s Dream Maker in second.
PYC CHALLENGE CUP TEAM
PYC has selected a terrifi c Challenge Cup team to represent the
Club at the June 19 through 21 competition at Gulfport. Our A boat
is Black Ice, skippered by Rick Zurn and JP Nolls, B boat, Rooster,
skippered by Hunter Riddle, C boat, Radio Flyer, skippered by Neil
McMillan and D boat, Average White Boat, skippered by Tim Dunton
and Susan McKinnon. Paul Gillette will help organize our team
and again provide us with great shore logistics. As Fleet Captain, I’ll
Captain the team and try to stay out of their way, and let PYC’s team
do their winning on the water.
APRIL RACING ACTIVITIES
In April PYC was busy hosting the Corsair Nationals to determine
the best of the multihull. Bert Rice chaired the Regatta and sailed as
well. Betsy Moraski and her Race Committee team provided support
for the week long racing venue. The Cruising Couples #1 Regatta
followed by the raft up at Ft McRae was the start of fun racing for all
the Cruising Couples in the Club rounded out PYC regatta events on
the bay last month.
Volunteers Needed for Snipe Nationals
by Betsy Moraski, Regatta Chair
PYC is hosting the Snipe National Regatta on June
19-26, 2009. We are expecting about 60 boats with 2
people per boat to participate plus family members and
friends for a total of possibly 150-200 people. Volunteers
are needed to support this event. As Regatta Chairman,
I invite you to become involved on land or water. To
volunteer email me @ topgunu20@aol.com.
The Club will remain open to the PYC membership
throughout the week with hopefully a minimum of
inconvenience. However, the member parking lot will
be roped off for boat parking, as it was for the Thistle
Regatta. Please frequent the Club that week and help
us show the Snipe sailors our special brand of “Southern
Hospitality”.
Summer Sailing Camp begins on Monday, June 1, and
classes are fi lling up. All sessions are Monday through
Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Classes are available
for Junior sailors ages 6 to 18. Class size is limited.
Registration forms are available on the PYC website at www.
pensacolayachtclub.org. Please do not wait to sign up and
end up on a waiting list. To ensure enrollment payment must be received
with completed registration forms.
Don’t forget to join us for Splash Day (Opening Day for Junior Sailing) at
PYC on May 3rd from 2:00PM-4:00PM. This will give Junior Sailors and
parents an opportunity to meet the Sailing Instructors and tour PYC, plus
kids can enjoy a sailboat rides, jump castle, ice cream bar and games.
The Wet N Cool Regatta held at Fairhope Yacht Club on April 4 & 5 was a
great regatta. Our PYC Junior Sailors represented our club with great pride
and sportsmanship and trophies for their excellent performance.
The PYC Junior Sailors earned excellent results at this year’s Preemie Cup
hosted by PBYC on April 18, with PYC running the Optimist course. Winds
were blowing 18 knots and the optimist sailed fi ve races, with Michael Rice
and Gorham Partington turning it into a match-racing event both placing
at the top of their fl eet. In the Laser Radial class, Dodge Rees earned
1st place, followed by Harrison Prochaska in 2nd place, and Brandon
Addison in 3rd place. As good as these results sound, they don’t tell the
whole story when taking account the boats they raced against included
boats rated the same or higher than the Laser Radial. These young sailors
received 2nd, 3rd, and 4th overall with unadjusted times. The boats they
raced against included Laser Full Rigs, Hobie Waves, and a Nacra.
Adult Sailing lessons can be scheduled by appointment. Classes will be
3 hours long, including classroom time and on the water. Your instructor will
teach basic sailing terminology, points of sail, knots, rigging, safety, and
how to sail aboard a Flying Scot, which is the GYA club racing sailboat.
This course is designed for beginners. PYC will offer clinics throughout the
year for those interested in racing.
The PYC Junior Sailors greatly appreciate the many contributions made
in honor of Commodore Staff Pulford. We thank Commodore Pulford’s
family for requesting donation be made to the PYC Junior Yacht Club in lieu
of fl owers.
To participate in the Wednesday afternoon club racing- one-design boats,
call or email me to reserve boat. Boats should be rigged and ready to sail by
5PM. Races begin east of PYC at 5:30PM until sunset then sailors will derig
their boats and meet for Hamburgers in the Club. Come out and watch
your sailors from shore, any help launching and recovery on the beach will
be appreciated. If you are interested in helping out with race committee
(RC) and learn the basics this is a perfect time for you to learn.
If you are interested in sailing for PYC on the Junior Lipton Team, contact
the PYC Sailing Director to learn more about Junior Lipton tryouts and
skipper eliminations.
In July PYC will be hosting both the Jr. Lipton Regatta and the Jr. Olympic
Regatta at PYC. We need volunteers on land and safety boats on the water,
please consider helping out with both of these Junior events.
For more information about PYC Junior Sailing programs or volunteering
to help with any of our fun races or scheduled Junior Regattas, please
April proved to be quite a social month for our families. First,
Opening Day with the Blessing of the Fleet was a wonderful
afternoon. Congratulations to Steve & Lesa Stack’s “Stack
Shack” for their 1st place prize for Best Dressed Powerboat.
Gilligan’s Island has never been so much fun to watch! Thanks
to Wendi & Jeff Fairchild’s agreeing to wear sombreros and moustaches
to help “Mucho Gusto” win the prize for Best Dressed Sailboat!
The Easter Brunch was phenomenal, with Big Billy the Clown’s magic
show & balloons, the Easter Egg Hunt where more than 1,400 eggs were
found, and the Easter Bunny’s appearance. What a delightful day thanks to
our wonderful PYC staff and tireless volunteers who made it all happen!
NEW DATE NIGHT WITH BABYSITTING
Then to conclude the month, we had our fi rst of hopefully many-to-come
“Date Nights” complete with babysitters at the Club. Be sure to watch your
email and for fl yers at the club announcing future Date Night events.
For the month of May, we are working on another Family Fun dinner so
look for an email for additional information as this develops. As always, if
you have any suggestions for other events (family-friendly or otherwise),
please email me at lynharr3@cox.net or call me at 261-5971. Thanks for
your involvement!
Another raft-up and another dire weather
prediction. An expected 30 knot blow and a 15
degree drop in temperature did not deter 7 boats
from enjoying the March raft-up in Little Sabine.
We all arrived before the cold front and took extra
precautions with our anchors. Many others arrived by land yacht bringing
a delightful array of side dishes to compliment the roast pork. A big thank
you goes to Pensacola Beach Yacht Club for their warm hospitality. The
weather did change dramatically. The wind increased as the temperature
decreased but Sunday morning found all 7 boats riding safely at anchor. By
all accounts, the pub crawl was a rousing success and all crawlers survived
without incident. Sunday brunch brought even more fun and camaraderie,
not to mention more wonderful food. This was a great raft-up in spite of the
weatherman.
MAY RAFT UP TO PORT ST. JOE
SHIP’S LOG BY DAVE HOFFMAN
One of my fi rst articles during our centennial year mentioned that the
fi rst event PYC hosted after forming in December 1908 was a cruise
to Camp Walton. Commodore Morgan led a fl eet of power boats there
for a weekend of partying. The event was such a success, that it set
the stage for an annual cruise, which became the highlight of the PYC
social scene. However, as any yachtsman knows, once two boats
head in the same direction the adrenaline starts to pump and a race is
on! It did not take long for the cruise to become a very serious race.
At fi rst the race was a “fi rst to fi nish is the winner” event. A huge silver perpetual
trophy with a speed boat on top was dedicated and still resides in our ballroom trophy
case. However, it soon became obvious that only a few members had any real chance of
winning, so handicaps were calculated to give cruisers an opportunity to collect a prize.
Each boat was given a start time based on their estimated speed. The slowest boats
started fi rst and the others started throughout the day with everyone fi nishing about the
same time to enjoy the big party at the Miramar Hotel.
And everyone had a great time, right? Well, maybe not everyone! Stories are told of
gunshots fi red across a competitor’s bow, fi st fi ghts at the picnic, arguments over the
scoring, competitors adding multiple and bigger engines and the speeds becoming so
fast that it became unsafe to participate. To get the adrenaline under control our wise
forefathers changed the format to a predicted log race, which became an immediate
success. Members would predict the time of day they would arrive based on their engine
speed, currents, winds and other factors. It quickly became the grandest event of the
year. If you owned anything that would fl oat you entered this race, estimated your time
to the nearest second, loaded up your friends, stashed away all timepieces and motored
to Ft Walton for party central! And what a party they had around that pool. Current
members that recall those days are cautious about just how much they tell about those
weekends.
Unfortunately, the membership lost interest in this event and it has been many years
since the race was held. However, our annual cruise to The Wharf might be an occasion
to resurrect the predicted log format, polish up the trophy and get that adrenaline fl owing
again. Let’s just be sure to check our fi rearms in addition to our watches before the
start!
FL COMMODORES’ ASSOCIATION
HONORS LIBBA DENNIS
BY PAST COMMODORE JOHN MATTHEWS
Mrs. Allen M. Dennis, Jr., better known of all PYC members as Libba, was recently
admitted to membership in the PYC Chapter of the Florida Commodores Association
as an Honorary Member. The Florida Commodores Association was recently created
to strengthen the ties between Past Commodores of recognized yacht clubs throughout
the State of Florida. With the creation of this new association, the founders realized that
all Past Commodores had received the benefi t of signifi cant others in their yacht clubs
in order to successful serve as the Commodore. As a result, the membership category
of Associate and Honorary Member was created to permit these individuals to join the
organization and be recognized for their contributions. So it is with Libba Dennis.
Libba’s husband was Vice Commodore of Pensacola Yacht Club and was in line to serve
as Commodore when he died suddenly. Since his death, Libba has continued to serve our
yacht club and each Commodore who has served since the death of her husband. Libba
continues to ensure that fresh fl owers are always on the dining tables at the club. She
places beautiful fl ower arrangements throughout the club on many occasions. In addition,
Libba is always willing to help the Commodore’s wife whenever she is asked. Libba has
been known to be actively involved in the Summer Sailing Program with some of her
younger relatives.
In honor of Libba’s continuing service to Pensacola Yacht Club and in recognition of her
commitment to the membership, Libba Dennis was made an Honorary Member of the
Pensacola Yacht Chapter of the Florida Commodores Association. Welcome Aboard!!!
PYC MARINA HURRICANE
PREPARDEDNESS by Jere Allen
The following action is to be taken when the
Commodore activates our “Hurricane Plan” due to
an expected landfall of a hurricane in our area:
1. The DOCK MASTER will immediately call all
wet slip tenants to remove their boats from the
marina within 24 hours. No boats will be allowed
to remain in the marina during a storm. Electrical
service will be one of the fi rst things to be shut off
to allow time to remove the pedestals. Following
the 24-hour boat removal period, the dock boards
will be removed.
2. All marina tenants should have a plan in place
for removing their boats from the PYC marina. If a
marina tenant is out of town or lives outside of the
PYC area they must have someone designated to
move their boat.
3. Boats in dry storage do not have to be removed.
However, masts must be taken down and the boat
properly secured.
4. A contractor has been lined up to remove the
dock boards in the marina but any volunteers that
can help with the process are welcome. Please
call the offi ce and let us know if you are willing to
help.
6. All tenants are requested to return their
updated information to the offi ce by June 1, 2009.
