METHVEN’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER -“Powered by Wirelessweb” Thursday 15
The ‘Friendly’ Triathlon
Julie Clements
Achievable goals was the order
of the day last Friday at the first
Triathlon organised by local
friendly event,
Steph and her
team did a great
Personal Trainer Steph Meredith.
job. There was a
Around 40 women, three fellas and two
BBQ and bouncy
youngsters gathered to take part in
castle just past
the event at the Methven Resort, more
the finish line at
to challenge themselves than to race
Steph’s for all
against each other.
the competitors,
It all started with the 200m swim in
families and
the Resort’s pool, which thankfully was a
supporters. Many
balmy 28° then onto bikes for a 12.5km
were so inspired
ride through town and concluded
that not only would they take part again next year but some were
the 4km run/walk at Steph’s place on
even talking about entering Women on Wheels.
Methven Chertsey Rd.
Josephine Watson said “I would encourage all people
Steph said “My clients were looking for
wanting to have a go at a triathlon to enter this one next
something to do after the Winter Weight
year. Anyone can do it - all ages, fitness levels. The sense of
Loss Challenge and so I suggested this
achievement is wonderful, and it is so much fun.”
event. I was expecting between 10 and
20 to sign up and was surprised when
A busy Steph Meredith Congratulations to winners Mandy McTigue with the fastest
time of 50mins and Dan Van der Salm fastest male time at
43 people registered. Then the questions started about nutrition, 55mins.
before and during the event and training schedules, I realised
how seriously they were taking it all.”
The participants were made up of locals from Methven,
Mayfield, Anama and Mt Somers, all different fitness levels,
Well done to everyone for getting out there and challenging
yourselves.
young and old, new mothers, first time triathletes and more
experienced. The youngest was Olly Hood at 10, closely
followed by his brother Harry at 11, the oldest competitor at 65
was Brian Humm. He said “If you don’t use it, you lose it!”
Olly and Harry were in Team Hood with Mum Becky and
not only did they complete the event in 51 minutes but they won
prizes as the youngest competitors. Becky said “I hope it will
encourage more mums and dads to enter next year with their
children.”
Despite some nervous looks at registration, everyone
seemed keen to get going. Prior to the event Margaret Feiss said
“I am excited and a little apprehensive; its my first time doing
anything like this. I am doing it as a challenge for myself as I feel
it is achievable.” And afterwards, “I am really proud of myself to
have finished the event, unharmed. The personal challenge is a
very emotive thing.”
Liz McMillan, Keryn Hooker and Jess Walker all agreed that
they were looking forward to it and their goal was to ‘finish’. “It’s
all a bit new to start worrying about times.” Liz said.
Janine Holland at the start said “I’m as ready as I’ll ever
be. The swim is my least favourite but I’m ok with the rest, the
interesting thing will be to put all three together.”
Carol Wilson, a best dressed winner, turned up in a pink
and black affair complete with cape and mask, she said, “I’m in
disguise so no one will know who came in last! This is all a bit of
fun and I’m looking forward to it.”
Other prize winners were, Janine Holland, Liz McMillan,
Tokiyo Hall, and Josephine Tanner for best dressed, whilst Emma
Dudley from Mt Somers won Liz McMillan’s $50 Intimo voucher
for most improved, she came in under her expected time and
Steph said “Emma was really hard to convince to enter the race,
and look how well she has done!”
The general consensus was that this was a well run, very
From the Editor
It has been brought to our attention that
a security alarm has been going off in
the middle of the night every night for the
last 3 weeks. Possibly from the Line Road
area.
Could everyone please check their
alarm systems, the residents in that area
are tired of being woken up.
Many thanks
Principal’s Column Alison Lilley
This will be the last column I write as there will be a new Principal
at Our Lady of the Snows School next year. A change in staff is a
time of great opportunity for a school and each person brings their
own strengths to the position of Principal. Schools are very complex
communities. Each child comes from a different family, often a different
culture and is an individual in their own right. All of these factors also apply to the staff.
Even a small school such as ours involves hundreds of interactions between people. For
nearly one hundred years this has been the case. Schools are people places!
I have loved my 11 years teaching at this school. Perhaps this is partly because it is by
far the longest I have spent in any one school. I am a past pupil of Catholic Schools so
the values and beliefs we teach in the school are familiar and positive. The community
support for the school is amazing; both from parents and the wider Methven Community.
Having been a parent of school aged children; I have a far more understanding attitude
to how busy family life is. There is an ever growing search by parents to develop the
spiritual, social and emotional strength of their children when they are already very
fortunate materially.
The New Zealand Curriculum allows children to set their own direction far more in
learning and widens their horizons. I know reading, writing and mathematics are vitally
important but that they are tools and pathways for other great learning. For 21st century
education Guy Claxon of the UK writes “we need a growing army of teachers dedicated
to helping young people develop the mind sets they will need to flourish in a tricky
world- through the results of their small scale classroom experiments.” I think National
Standard information forms only a small part of reporting on learning and in time it will
stop being seen as the only thing being focussed on by government and the media and
become an important part of the mix in education.
really must thank some people. In Methven and the surrounding area all the schools
I work well together and other teachers and Principals have given me tremendous
support. The teachers at Our Lady of the Snows, past and present do an amazing job.
Margaret McLeod is a legend in administration in the office. The people on our Boards
of Trustees have an increasingly
complex job and they do it for
the children. Grateful thanks to
Tracey Clemens, Phil McKendry
and Myles Connew who have
Chaired the Board in recent
times. But the school is for the
children and their growth and
development in all aspects of
learning. They are the most
exciting members in any school
community.
This award is for “A school leaver who, every day, faces life with courage, determination, dignity and good humour”.
The 2012 Mount Hutt College Everyday Hero recipient is - Jonny Callaghan
The performances by the students were amazing, including
a guitar solo by Thomas Klever (left). The awards table was
groaning under the weight of trophies. Guest Speaker, Nathan
Faavae was funny, humble despite his achievements and an
inspiration to the Seniors, especially those leaving this year.

Lauriston School News
Our topic focus at Lauriston School this year has been
“Change”.
This term we are looking at kitchen chemistry and experimenting
with reactions that cause change. Experiments have included making five minute ice
cream and finding out why hot water is better than cold water for making jelly. We also
now know that a whole egg can blow up in a microwave and if you don’t put baking
powder in your scones you get something resembling hockey putts!
The 5 and 6 year olds in Mt Peel are also watching the changes happening in their
vegetable garden. The radishes have sprouts, the first beans and peas are poking
through and we have netting in place to stop the birds and school chooks eating our
little lettuces. Our potatoes are loving the extra water they get from the drinking fountain.
We are waiting for the threat of frosts to pass before we transplant our lettuces, as we
have learnt about the change that can happen to plant with a frost.
DON’T BE A WALLFLOWER...
Don’t plant your foot through an intersection...Plant This instead!
Get your own pack of “Plant This, Not This” sunflower seeds
There were six Mt Hutt
nominated at this
they came home with three
Earlier in the year we decided our major project would be to fund
raise for a portable sound system that could be used for big events
like pet day and swimming sports but also for aerobics and jump
jam fitness outside on the courts.
We have been busy selling baking on pet day and we organised a school disco. We
also had a wacky hair day and children paid a gold coin donation.
All the fundraising has been fun activities.
Today Mr Peter Garde presented us with a cheque for $2000 dollars from the Methven
Lions Club so that we can go ahead and buy the sound system before we leave the
school and present it to younger students.
big thank you to all the men in Lions because we know what a lot of work goes into
Thanks to Farm Right for sponsoring
Mt Hutt Thanks You.... James McKenzie
You would be forgiven to think we are still in the thick of the ski season given that
well over a metre of snow has fallen in the four weeks since Mt Hutt closed. In
bygone years, we may well have pushed out our closing date more than we did
but there are many risks doing this and the gains we make at the height of the season
can be quickly frittered away with a couple of low visitor weeks at the end.
In short, Mt Hutt had good season. In a year when many other ski areas saw a drop
in their numbers, we finished up with 30% more visitors compared to last year. We are
obviously encouraged by this but recognise we have plenty of challenges ahead of us
to get back up to pre-earthquake visitor levels. Until this happens, our plans for facility
improvements will need to move forward at a slightly slower pace. Nevertheless we are
delighted to announce a capital investment programme exceeding $1m this summer
and I will be communicating more details about this over the coming months.
Whilst it is impossible to attribute our growth on one particular aspect I think the
Kids4free initiative, introduced for the first time this season, was a key factor. The impact
of this initiative would have been significantly less without the support of the local travel,
food, ski rental and accommodation providers who really got behind the campaign to
ensure that Mt Hutt/Methven had something very unique and compelling to offer families
seeking a premier but affordable ski experience.
On behalf of the team at NZSki, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to these
businesses for their forward thinking and continued support. We plan to push the
Kids4free message further and wider in the run-up to the 2013 season and I am
confident we can continue to build on the gains we have made and attract many more
visitors to Methven next winter.
In the meantime, bring on the sunshine and warmer days and have a great summer!
THE BROWN PUB
Been in to try the nearly summer menu yet?
It’s a tester for the summer menu and we’re trying some new things - why don’t you
come in and let us know what you think of our Tex Mex food! Fajitas, burritos, texan burgers,
ribs or chicken parmesan anyone?
Just before you panic. Don’t. The Brown’s favs are still there too.
Jug promo still on – For every jug purchased Sun – Thurs you get a stamp – buy 8 get one free – pretty wicked. Cheers, Trev.

Grow Your Own Mary Ralston
In last week’s column I made a mistake – I said that yams,
being day-length sensitive, should be planted well before
the shortest day – I should have said longest day!
This coming weekend is Show Weekend and the mythical
time when it is supposedly safe to plant heat-loving and
frost-sensitive crops such as tomatoes, beans, zucchinis,
pumpkins and corn.
We all know that frosts can happen here at any time of the
year and this year seems particularly chilly! But still it is worth the risk that we will get a
frost and/or cold damp weather, and things do grow fast once the sun comes out so we
may as well get things in the ground. Be ready with the frost cloth, bags and buckets
on calm cool evenings and go out before dark to cover things up. There’s nothing
worse than waking up at 2am and trying to convince yourself to go out and cover the
tomatoes.
If you are buying tomatoes to plant outside, I would get the small cherry tomatoes –
these will have the best chance of ripening in our fickle climate. My favourite variety
is Sweet 100. To speed things up, it can
be worth planting seedlings rather than
seeds, and in the case of tomatoes,
buying bigger ones rather than tiny. We
are lucky there is a good choice of plants
to buy ready-to-plant and that way you
can get a few weeks ahead.
Beans are a great thing to grow and it is
nice to try several varieties. I grow the
dwarf types and the reliable climbers
Scarlet Runner and Shiny Fardenlosa.
The climbers need tall supports such as
wire netting attached to a frame made
from steel posts, or a teepee made from
bamboo or other sticks.
Have a good weekend – let’s hope for
good planting weather!
Karate Belts Awarded
On Monday night the Methven
Shotokan Karate Club held their
gradings. To move up to the next
belt level each member had to preform
various karate routines to the 3 judges
satisfaction.
Some of the younger members were
quite nervous before their turn, but
once they got into their routines, nerves
soon fell away and they all did really
well.
Congratulations to the following
members in gaining these belts:
A
Television Award for
Bob Grieve
recent surprise arrival at his parent’s
house in Methven, Bob Grieve,
currently living in London, England,
arranged a short visit to attend the New
Zealand Television Awards in Auckland on
Saturday, 3 November.
Some of Snowfed’s readers may
remember “Bob’s View” – a column written
by Bob during his senior year at Mt Hutt
College. After high school, Bob pursued
his interest in television and achieved a
Bachelor of Broadcasting degree at CPIT,
and has worked with TV3 News as both
editor and cameraman over the past nine
years. In February of this year, he and
his wife Martha moved to London where
Bob took up the position of European
cameraman.
In September, Bob learned he had been
nominated for two awards – one for best
cameraman, and one for best currant
affairs editing. The award for best
cameraman went to a TV3 workmate,
and Bob received the New Zealand
Television Award for Best Currant Affairs
Editing for the “60 Minutes” documentary
“After Shock” about the Christchurch
Earthquakes.
Although it was a very fleeting trip, it
was a chance to catch up with friends
and family before returning to London.
Methven Tennis Club News
Kiwi Tennis is run on a Monday
night by Annette Talbot and fellow
coaches, Irene Duff and Sue
Furndorfler. There are over 50 children
involved in this fun programme. The
children are learning some great skills.
Ladies Tennis runs on Monday
mornings starting at 10 o’clock. For more
information please phone Annette Talbot
on 303 0797.
Adults Twilight tennis is well under
way. This is a social doubles competition
held on Tuesday evenings. Leading the
table after Round 4 is Peter Scott. Also
clocking up some good scores are Kim
Turney, Sandra Marr, Tim Robinson and
Rob Turney. There have been some close
games and some very serious social
tennis going on!
We have eleven teams involved in
the Mid Canterbury Junior Competition
and A Reserve. The children are very
lucky to receive coaching from Mid
Canterbury Tennis Coach Chris Anderson
on Thursdays here in Methven. Hopefully
all players have had a start. We now
just need the weather to be kind so we
can really get going. Because we have
so many teams this year rather than
publishing all results we will profile a team
each week. Full results are published in
the Ashburton Guardian each week on a
Tuesday.
Thank you to John and Jane
Wright who kindly fixed the gap under
the fence on court three, by supplying
the cost of the materials and labour to
do so! Also thanks to KT’s who have
appreciates your support!
