Methven Welcomes a New Business 

Hollie Doyle and her husband Darren have been visiting Methven at weekends 

for the past eighteen months. They loved the place so much they decided to 

make it their home, moving from Dunedin just three weeks ago. Originally from 

the Gold Coast, Hollie is a well renowned hairdresser and is preparing to open 

her new salon called ‘Voodoo’, whilst Darren is the new Operations Manager at 

the Skydiving School at Pudding Hill. 

Hollie has enjoyed a fair amount of fame on the Gold Coast, regularly providing 

hair and makeup styling for photo shoots, TV commercials and films for Movie 

World. She has also featured on the covers of magazines such as Gold Coast 

Wedding, Allure and Queensland Brides. 

Now retired from the glamourous life, Hollie is happy to settle down and work 

in her salon. With thirteen years experience and eight years running her own 

salons, she is confident in her skills and talent. 

“I specialise in putting hair up and creating styles that are easy to maintain at 

home, making my clients feel great.” 

The secret of her success? Listening to her clients needs and constantly 

improving her knowledge and skills. 

“I believe in keeping up with the latest techniques and technology. I have trained 

with Toni & Guy in Brisbane and London, in sydney with sharon Blain and have 

just completed a course in 3D colour dimension run by Wella.”

tune!! Stephen studied music for a 

number of years and has performed 

in many concerts and church music 

teams. He plays five different 

instruments and has written and 

recorded many songs, he currently 

teaches music and runs the ‘ArtBeat’ 

music store in Ashburton. We have 

had lot of interest in this one day 

course, so be in quick, spaces filling 

fast and class numbers are limited to 

10!! 

Make the flowers in your garden into a 

piece of art! 

New this year, Fabulous Flowers is a 

one day course with Annette Waller 

who will show students two aspects of 

floral design a container design and a 

cascade design. Annette comes from 

just down the road near Geraldine, she 

is qualified National Teacher of the 

NZ Floral Art Society and has been 

with the Geraldine Floral Art group for 

around 20 years. With her wealth of 

knowledge the course will be fun and 

informative.

There has been a spate of cars being 

stolen and dumped in rural areas. 

The vehicles have been easy targets for 

thieves with the owners either leaving the 

keys in the ignition or inside the cab. 

Please be more vigilant, lock your vehicle 

and take the keys with you. 

Some victims may experience problems 

with their insurance companies when they 

try and make a claim, only to be told that 

they have been neglectful. 

This is Methven and we should expect 

to be able to leave our property and it 

be there when we return. Unfortunately, 

however, the world is changing and we as 

locals need to make changes too by taking 

simple measures to protect our property. 

St John are looking for volunteers to join their ambulance and events staff. 

Come along to our information evening and see what is involved and what training you 

will receive. No first aid experience is necessary, just a commitment to caring for our 

community.

LABOUR DAY HOLIDAY - MONDAY 24 OCTOBER 2011 

The Ashburton and Rakaia resource recovery parks will be closed on 

Monday 24 October 2011. 

Kerbside refuse and recyclables programmed for collection on a Monday in Tinwald 

East, Methven, Mayfield, Hinds and Mt Somers will be collected on Tuesday 25 

October 2011. 

There are no changes to any other collections. 

Please ensure all rubbish and recycling is placed at kerbside by 7.30am on 

collection day.

Where Are They Now?.... 

We start this new Snowfed series with Thomas Wilson, who graduated 

Mt Hutt College in 2001. 

Thomas is based at Christchurch University in the Geological 

department and he lectures on Hazards and Disaster Management. 

focusing mainly on volcanic eruptions and their affect on society, 

agriculture and essential services. His position involves 40% teaching, 

40% Research and 20% Administration. Thomas said 

“It is a great mix of engineering, the physical and social sciences.” 

Thomas has been to South America, looking at the long term affects of 

the 1991 Hudson Eruption on the surrounding environment. In 2008 the 

Chilean Government invited the team back after the Chaitén Eruption. 

“These eruptions are of particular interest to us, as the expectation is 

that our NZ volcanoes would behave similarly. It is allowing us to look at best procedures 

to employ in preparation of an eruption and then strategies to put into place afterwards 

for communities and farmers.” 

Thomas, has for the last 12 months, been really busy doing his bit for the recovery of 

Canterbury. “It has been very satisfying to be able to put some of this research into 

good use for the revitalization of Christchurch and Canterbury. I have been involved in 

providing advice to the Emergency Rural Recovery Group and for the rehabilitation of the 

areas of Christchurch affected by liquefaction. With this all happening on the doorstep 

the information we gather may be of incredible benefit in the future.” 

So how did Thomas get to be a volcanologist? 

I was very lucky to get an academic position at the University. My colleagues say I am 

as happy with the social sciences as I am with the physical so I get to bounce around 

between the different disciplines. I took Geography, History, Chemistry, Calculus and 

Physics at school then onto Canterbury University for my BSc(Hons) and PhD. I did 

thesis on the affect of volcanic ash on agriculture, stock and crops, creating a model 

which got lots of attention. 

I enjoyed school, it was cool we did lots of things, cricket, rugby, and hockey, the drama 

productions were great too. Being a small school meant we had more opportunities, but I 

must admit the high level of enthusiasm from the teachers also made a huge difference. 

We were all little gits at times but it is great to be able to say thanks. 

I had a lot of respect for Don McLeod. Bruce Dickson was an inspiring teacher both in 

the classroom for Geography and on the Cricket field, I few life skills were learnt there. 

Tony Wood in Science and his wife Kate were also great. 

So where does Thomas see himself 5 years? 

I hope to be able to stay here for the next 2 years, to see Christchurch up and running 

again, after that I guess I will be looking to go overseas. There is a trade-off here, of pay 

for quality of life and despite NZ being at the forefront of research into volcanoes there is 

a shortage of funding for projects so I will probably end up in Alaska or South America. 

Ultimately I would like to be in a Research Management role.

Who is responsible for our waste/ 

rubbish/recycling? 

The road side collectors, the waste 

depot or the landfill team. Perhaps the 

council or even the government, looking 

at the big picture. 

No none of them really. The answer is 

in the question. It’s “OUR” waste. Let’s 

face it and take responsibility. Everyone 

else mentioned has put systems in 

place to help us take care of it. 

Then again not all waste is rubbish. If 

it can be reused then reuse it or take 

to where it can be recycled. If it has a 

value then it is not rubbish. 

On Monday there was a free seminar 

on just such a topic. I went along for 

personal reasons. As it turned out it 

was also held to express and discuss 

a possible community topic. As such 

I expected to see more familiar faces 

especially local businesses. 

The seminar was about BOKASHI 

composting system and the recycling of 

a very valuable item.... Kitchen waste. 

The group of people that attended were 

very enthusiastic and listened intently. 

The speaker, Neville Burt (director of 

Bokashi NZ), gave a presentation of 

how the system works and where it 

was operating. It is an international 

product that is gaining in momentum 

as governments, councils and Joe 

Public realise how valuable green 

waste is as a resource. For example, 

in Christchurch, 27% (over 70,000 

tons) of the waste going to landfill was 

organic kitchen and garden waste. 

This waste could be made in to high 

quality compost which is ready to use in 

months. 

One of the major advantages of 

the Bokashi system is that it can 

accommodate varying quantities 

of waste. It also takes care of dairy 

products and meat. It is easy, fast, 

affective and practically odour free.

Hi weather watchers. Winter continues 

to have a say. It is raining as I write 

this. Up until 4pm Tuesday there had 

already been 10mm of rain on top of the 

early1.7mm before 9am. During the last 

two weeks there has been 28.2mm of rain 

recorded. The maximum temperature on 

Monday was 21.2 degrees – the highest 

temperature in the last two weeks. The 

minimum temperature was -1 degree. The 

rain looks set to continue. Hopefully it is 

fine for this weekend.

Music Fest 2011 Julie Clements 

The weather was kind and the sun 

shone all afternoon for the first ever 

Music Fest held at Mt Hutt College by 

local students. It turned out to be a great 

venue, the sausages were sizzling, 

kids were playing tennis, riding their 

bikes and running around the field, able 

to make as much noise as they liked 

without disturbing anyone. 

Around 200 people came along to 

support family and friends who were 

performing, some for the very first time. 

Wayne Pannett, music teacher and 

mentor to most of the artists, introduced 

each act and played in the backing 

band. 

The quality of each band and artist was 

incredible. Thomas Kleven on Guitar 

really shone and Courtney Holmes has 

a lovely voice, doing credit to Fergie’s 

‘Big Girls don’t Cry’. Nerve covered Kiwi 

artists like Bic Runga and Julia Deans. 

Josh Marr, Nerve band member also 

played back up for the solo artists. He 

said, “I found it a bit difficult to remember 

all the songs but it was a great

A band from Ashburton College came up 

to perform, called ‘Ash Coll’ they were 

the youngest band there. Drummer, 

Scotty Thomson is only 9 yrs old and he 

said, “I’ve only played at church before, 

this was ‘interesting’.” 

Greta Casey-Solly sang with Laura 

Hood as well as singing with her band 

Homebase and then she sang for 

her Mum who was freaking out about 

her going to Sydney to the School of 

Performing Arts. Called ‘Let me Go’, it 

was beautiful written and brought tears 

to more eyes than just her Mum’s! 

The big surprise was Scrubby. A very 

energetic band with a punk rock feel, 

Olivia Molloy gave her all in true rock 

chick style. They played well known 

classic rock songs like Wild thing, 

Johnny be Good and Olivia’s favourite 

Cherry Bomb. Inspired by Joan Jett, 

Olivia said, “I wasn’t too nervous but 

would have like to have had more 

clapping and response from the 

audience.” Nonetheless Scrubby got an 

enormous round of applause at the end 

of their set. 

Mum’s Sandra and Caron agreed that 

it was a “Fantastic showcase of local 

talent. Wayne has done a fabulous job. 

He is patient and full of praise and draws 

the best from the students.” 

Fiona Maw said “It’s wonderful to see all 

the kids on stage, I knew some of them 

at Primary and I can see today, how 

they have grown as individuals. Wayne 

makes this happen, you can see the 

twinkling in his eyes. Events like this 

give musicians an opportunity to perform 

their songs, and once they have shared 

them, they are inspired to write more.” 

As students depart the school for the 

next chapter in their lives, a new group 

of talented teenagers will be coming 

through. I look forward to seeing them 

on stage at next year’s show.

Our fabulous Educator Sue Duff and her 

children have their own garden plot, based in 

the grounds of Mount Hutt College in Methven 

Sue saw an opportunity for her little people to learn about nature and asked the 

College if the children could share the garden with the older students and this is how 

the ‘Kids Vege Patch’ evolved. 

The children have been busy painting their own banner to put on the fence around 

the garden and constructing scarecrows. They have a glasshouse with silverbeet, 

lettuce, corn, tomato, carrot and spring onion seedlings ready to be planted out as 

the weather warms up. The children take great delight in watering and weeding their 

gardens together and watching their veges grow. Sue says the children get really 

excited when they can take produce home to their families and it gives them a real 

sense of achievement. 

“As we left the garden today Penny and I heard squeals of 

delight and looked back to see the children searching under an 

old piece of carpet, they had obviously found the slugs and 

worms they had been looking for!”

Time Running Out to Have Say on 

Local Water Issues 

People interested in having their say on 

the Ashburton Zone Committee’s draft 

Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) 

have until 21 October to provide their 

feedback. 

In late September the zone committee 

hosted a series of well-attended public 

meetings to facilitate discussion around 

the draft ZIP. 

Committee Chair Matthew Hall said that 

the public meetings were invaluable 

to providing an insight into the variety 

of community views around water 

management. 

“The meetings helped inform us about 

what people liked and didn’t like and 

what they thought was missing and their 

feedback will all be taken into account 

when we begin reviewing and updating the 

draft ZIP before submitting it to councils,” 

he said. 

The Ashburton Zone Committee’s draft 

ZIP recommends actions, responsibilities 

and time-frames for activities to help 

achieve the principles, targets and 

goals set out in the Canterbury Water 

Management Strategy (CWMS). 

It has been developed following numerous 

committee meetings and extensive 

stakeholder and community engagement 

to gather information about the region’s 

water resource. 

The draft ZIP includes recommendations 

on four key priority areas; Hakatere / 

Ashburton River, ecosystem health and 

biodiversity, water quality, and water 

quantity. 

Matthew Hall says how water is allocated 

and used is crucial to the future of the 

region so people should feel compelled to 

have their say. 

“How our water is managed will affect our 

region for generations to come. It is vital 

the right water management approach 

is taken to ensure present and future 

generations the greatest social and 

economic benefits from the resource. 

“We would encourage people who 

weren’t able to make it along to one of 

our meetings to go online and submit a 

feedback form or collect one from one of 

the council offices,” he said. 

The Ashburton Draft ZIP prioritises the 

ten Canterbury Water Management 

Strategy targets in the Ashburton zone 

and suggests actions to achieve the 

milestones set out in the Strategy. 

It contains more than 70 recommendations 

to the Ashburton District Council, 

Environment Canterbury and other 

stakeholders. 

Community members have until 21 

October to provide their feedback on the 

Ashburton Draft ZIP. 

This can be done by visiting www.ecan. 

govt/canterburywater, by collecting a 

copy of the draft ZIP from Enivronment 

Canterbury (Ellesemere Centre, 24
