F <strong>Appendix</strong> A: <strong>Prescribed</strong> <strong>Scales</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Arpeggios</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>all</strong><br />
grades<br />
C All scales <strong>and</strong> arpeggios in <strong>all</strong> grades must be played from memory.<br />
C For Pregrade 1 <strong>and</strong> Grade 1, scales must be played tongued.<br />
C From Grade 2 to Grade 8, scales must be played tongued <strong>and</strong> slurred,<br />
at the choice of the examiner.<br />
C St<strong>and</strong>ard Baroque fingering is to be used unless alternatives produce<br />
better intonation, or should slurred playing otherwise be impossible.<br />
C <strong>Scales</strong> <strong>and</strong> arpeggios must be played in one breath.<br />
C Where Harmonic or Melodic minor scales are prescribed (<strong>for</strong> Grades<br />
1, 2 <strong>and</strong> 3), it is <strong>for</strong> the decision of the c<strong>and</strong>idate which scales to<br />
present.<br />
C Minimum tempo requirements can be used as a guide. Faster tempos<br />
will be accepted.<br />
C The relevant compass of the prescribed scales <strong>and</strong> arpeggios is<br />
indicated with Roman numerals which are to be interpreted as<br />
follows:<br />
I : One octave<br />
I+ : A twelfth (one octave plus a fifth)<br />
I9 : One octave <strong>and</strong> down to the dominant<br />
II : Two octaves<br />
