As in previous years, a number of individuals have died because of reasons not yet fully explained, although bacterial infections seem to be at least
partly responsible. Fortunately, rearing success was good and therefore the South American fur seal population within the ESB has only slightly
decreased within the past 24 months.
One of the main goals for the studbook in the future is still to find additional holders. A second bachelor group would be very beneficial, but also
facilities interested in a harem group are needed.
Despite 29 births (of which 10 did not survive), the population has decreased over 2007 and 2008. This is mainly due to outbreaks of sealion TB at
several collections and the transfer of 13 animals to non EAZA zoos (though not necessarily out of the programme).
Sealion TB remains a serious issue for this population.
Beata Kuznair (Krakow Zoo) helped by the new studbook keeper from 2009 (Olivia Walter c/o Twycross Zoo) has made a concerted effort to track
down many of the Patagonian sealions in Europe. The result of this and an increase in EAZA membership, has resulted in a marked increase in the
number of holders.
Non EAZA members are not included in this report however their data is being kept in the SPARKS dataset.
Zalophus californianus
Summary
Californian sealion
ESB Annual Report 2007 - 2008
ALBUFEIRA The status on 1 January 2007 is 3.3.0 instead of 4.3.0 as listed on 31 December 2006.
AMSTERDAM The status on 1 January 2007 is 2.3.0 instead of 3.2.0 as listed on 31 December 2006.
BARCELONA-ZOO The status on 1 January 2007 is 1.2.0 instead of 3.6.0 as listed on 31 December 2006.
OPOLE The status on 1 January 2007 is 0.2.0 instead of 0.0.0 as listed on 31 December 2006.
STUTTGART The status on 1 January 2007 is 2.7.0 instead of 4.6.0 as listed on 31 December 2006.
The Californian sealion ESB is doing well. The population as well as the number of holders are still growing slowly each year. There is a slight
problem with surplus males, but so far programme has been able to place most males in non-EAZA institutions.
The neonatal mortality remains a serious problem for the whole European bottle-nosed dolphin (BD) population, even though the last couple of years
show some improvements. The causes for this mortality are still unknown, in spite of continuous, broad and deep-probing necropsies.
Programme recommendations: Since the problem with neonate mortality remains, it is recommended to continue a broad approach to the study of
reproduction, in order to reveal the critical factors for survival. A large international workshop with emphasis on the reproduction of bottle-nosed
dolphins in Europe was held at Parc Asterix, Paris, in October, 2005. This was a follow up of a similar workshop held in San Diego in 1999. All
institutions are urged to prioritise breeding.
For many years, the management and redistribution of surplus young males has been discussed. The establishment of all male groups is a possible
management option. Three such groups exists (Harderwijk - Netherlands, Zoomarine/Albufeira - Portugal, and Münster - Germany) and the
establishment and maintenance of these and new such groups should be further studied. The involvement of these males in reproduction can be
arranged by means of AI; thereby the group dynamics need not be disturbed by removing or adding males in connection with breeding.
Considerable progress has been achieved in the development of AI for odontocetes. Three EEP institutions so far are involved in this work with the
bottlenose dolphin: Genova, Zoomarine/Albufeira, Harderwijk, and several other institutions have expressed interest to be involved. The birth of the
The studbook is being converted to SPARKS. It will be ready and presented as a complete studbook for the participants in 2009.
So far approximately 2/3 of the bottle-nosed dolphin holders in Europe are members of this EEP (14 EAZA and 7 non-EAZA institutions). It is the
clear strategy of this program to involve, if possible and pending approval by the EEP Committee, all holders in the programme in order to secure the
long term management of the species.
