The population increases slowly with some transfer recommendations resulting in successful pairs. 

The population would benefit from an exchange of animals with the North American SSP and/or the Japanese region.

A series of transfers were carried out during the year to see if new partnerships would encourage breeding. 

Bioparc Valencia were new participants willing to hold four aged and non-breeding females to release space in other holding institutions. 

The population has increased by one but the situation for the species does not really improve.

Summary 



The programme remains stable but needs to increase in both number of animals and holding institutions. There is still a bias in favour of male births 

and a lack of suitable females to pair them with. 

Szeged joined the programme. Twycross remain commited to the programme despite not having animalds at the end of the year. 

We continue to explore the possibilities of importing all the viable animals from the North American SSP but progress is slow.

Observations/notes: 

Offspring (males and females) usually can be kept in their familiar group at least until being four years of age with no problems. Mating between a 

breeding male and his daughter before this age is rarely observed and if it happens usually no pregnancy will follow it. Mating between breeding 

females and young males can be considered as social-learning and if no fights between males follow mounting, males can be kept in the group until 

being 4-5 years old, if not older. 

We need to improve survival of neonates. Close monitoring of animals after birth is recommended to identify the failure causes. Please try also to 

identify cause of death and send the necropsy reports to the EEP coordinator. In case of hand-rearing, early introduction of the offspring to their 

parents is advisable. We had a problem of surplus males in the past but in the future we probably will be able to relocate almost all them.

The population slight increased in the reporting period. The Old World Monkey TAG recommends this species to be more intensively managed and 

the population to grow. The ESB will be moved from Geraldine Pothet (Paris-Jardin) to Tjerk ter Meulen (Kerkrade) in 2009. Collections interested to 

start with black mangabeys are kindly asked to get in touch with the new studbook keeper (t.ter.meulen@gaiapark.nl).

Calculations carried out using animals with unknown parentage (with 53.1% this is a large proportion of the population) show us that we need to 

substantially increase the population from 210 animals to 425. Alternatively we could increase the effective population size (the number of animals 

breeding in the population). 

Steps are being taken to reduce the unknown parentage information within the studbook, but much of this is historical or from institutions which hold 

multi-male adults and are unsure of the parentage of offspring. 

Aims of captive management: 

• Limit breeding from individuals with high inbreeding coefficients or mean kinship value. 

• Promote breeding from potential founder individuals, or those of high rank (indicated by low mean kinship values). 

• Breed animals of similar mean kinship. 

• Actively move individuals within the EEP to promote breeding between individuals from different pedigrees, and to aid the above aims. 

• Promote the keeping of multi-male multi-female groups.

SELAMATKAN YAKI!

This year a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been drafted to provide a foundation for the new conservation programme, Selamatkan Yaki 

(in essence this translates to ‘Save Sulawesi crested macaques’; yaki is the local term for the species). 

The key mission of this programme is to conserve Sulawesi crested macaques and their habitats, in their native range. This will not only aim to 

save this species from the inevitable extinction which will occur without proactive conservation efforts, but also preserve the rich biodiversity of this 

area. 

More details about this project, Sulawesi crested macaque conservation and threats facing them, are included in a recently published book . 


Research is an integral part of this EEP, which underpins our knowledge of wild macaque biology and enables us to measure how captive life affects 

zoo housed macaque biology and thus promoting conservation and welfare of this species. 

Zoo-based research: 

Current projects include Kathy Baker’s PhD, which is investigating the evolution of personality within this species and its use as an indicator of 

welfare. 

Field research: 

This year studies undertaken in Sulawesi included two studies exploring the effect of tourism on Sulawesi crested macaque behaviour and welfare 

(by Audrey Paulus) and the perception and attitudes of local people toward the macaques and their habitats.

General summary 

Worldwide status: 

Populations of wild Sulawesi crested macaque are continuing to decline and they are now considered Critically Endangered (Supriatna and 

Andayani, 2008). The captive population is biased towards European zoos, which holds the largest population relative to other zoo association 

regions. The viability of these captive populations is still in doubt, and more zoos are required to hold the species to ensure genetic diversity can be 

maintained. 

Overview of animals outside the EAZA region 

AZA*: 8 institutions, 17.24.1 macaques;



ARAZPA*: 1 institution, 3.1.0 macaques; 

Elsewhere*: 4 institutions, 18.8.1 macaques. 

*It should be noted that these figures only represent animals from zoos which subscribe to ISIS, so these numbers provide an underestimate of the 

captive population. For example, there are a number of captive Sulawesi macaques in Indonesian zoos and sanctuaries which are known to not be 

listed on ISIS. 

EAZA EEP overview 

At the end of December 2008, three zoos no longer hold Sulawesi crested macaques (Aachen/D; Lodz/PL; Yarmouth/GB) and four zoos have joined 

the programme (Cambron/B; Farjestadens/S; Ismir/T; Induna/SA). At the end of 2008 there were 29 zoos listed within the EAZA EEP. 

The European population has remained stable, with 202 individuals (72.122.8); this reflects a small decline of the population due to few more deaths 

than births. The genetic diversity of this population remains high at about 95%.

There are a considerable numbers of surplus animals; the Mandrill EEP is seeking for new holders with new and large facilities. In the past few years 

few institutions were interested in this species, but they decided to keep drills in the end. 

The other very important issue of the whole program is the SIV problem. Unfortunately only a very small part of the whole population has been tested 

so far. In the last two years several transfers were cancelled due to positive SIV results. All mandrill holders are requested to test their population as 

we need much more information about the SIV status of the whole population to make much better management plans and to give transfer 

recommendations in the future.

There were 15.9.1 births over the year of which 1.2.1 were not raised. Causes for the infant mortality had been stress related to transport, repeated 

bad maternal behaviour and accidents/injuries. The male biased sex ratio is obvious and will cause some problems in the years to come when 

dealing with the surplus of males. 

At Le Pal/Dompierre one male baby was delivered by caesarean section and had to be hand-reared afterwards as the mother showed bad maternal 

behaviour in all cases of pregnancies before and also when attempted to introduce the baby to the parents. 

Out of the four (1.3) deaths of animals three (1.2) were age related. One of these females (aged 29) was at the time of death the oldest gelada in the 

EEP. 

There have been a number of transfers according to recommendations and within the masterplan for this EEP. Edinburgh received a female-unit 

from Rheine. These will be combined with an unrelated male after finishing quarantine. The hand-raised male born in 2006 in Rheine was transferred 

to Le Pal (together with two young males) as mates for the hand-raised male there. Combining these four males happened without any problems and 

the overall situation and future perspective for these animals is regarded as very satisfying. Le Pal sent out their adult pair (with the 

“problem-female”) to Howletts (new EEP participant). Three adult males from Edinburgh and Lisieux moved to Besancon (new EEP participant) to 

form a bachelor group. Besancon will act as a “retirement-home” for older gelada males who are not or no more needed for breeding purpose. Zlin 

Lesna Zoo and Whipsnade Wild Animal Park guaranteed future participation in the Gelada EEP. 

As a result from the Gelada EEP workshop and from improved correspondence with Wildlife Conservation Society / Bronx Zoo the EEP will receive a 

male gelada from Bronx Zoo who will bring in unrepresented blood-lines to the EEP population. Bronx Zoo will receive 5 male geladas from the EEP

for exhibit purpose. In fact the EEP stays as a pure European based programme. Bronx Zoo supports the EEP in donating the male mentioned 

whereas the EEP helps Bronx Zoo to keep its specialized exhibit “alive” when providing selected animals. 

Twenty-two representatives of current and future Gelada EEP members participated in the Gelada EEP workshop hosted by NaturZoo Rheine in 

October 2007. As a result the gelada holders are now very much up-dated on the current knowledge of husbandry and biology of geladas and the 

basis for summarized husbandry-guidelines is given. Also statements on the goal of this EEP, the educational value and on hand-rearing had been 

formulated. Finally, comprehensive transfer-recommendations had been discussed and approved. The workshop was regarded as a very worthwhile 

one and the active involvement of so many participants proved the high interest in geladas by the European zoo community. 


No less than 14 transfers were realised in the year following to the establishment of the management plan and recommendations formulated during 

the Gelada Workshop (held in October 2007). All these transfers dealt with male geladas. 

Besancon went on acting as a “retirement-home” for older gelada males who are not or no more needed for breeding purpose. In doing so they are of 

greatest importance for the Gelada EEP. They succeeded in introducing 5 more adult males. So by the end of the year their bachelor-group 

numbered 8 animals. 

The import of an adult male gelada from Bronx Zoo New York to Rheine was of importance for the EEP as this male is bringing in new blood-lines. In 

return the EEP sent out five males from Stuttgart to New York Bronx. This transfer was agreed from the species committee. This enables Bronx Zoo 

to keep its specialized exhibit “alive”. 

Replacement of harem leaders and introduction of males to female units took place at Rheine (in two groups), Berlin, Edinburgh, Romagne and 

Zürich. As expected it took considerable time for the groups to settle down after these rearrangements and also a number of infanticides occurred. 

Each introduction had been closely monitored in the respective zoos and we will see if we can find some “things in common” to include in husbandry 

guidelines. 

In consequence of these restructurings the number of births in total had been very low over the year. 

Among the deaths there had been those of three geriatric females, three infanticides and a male suffering from injuries from competitive fights. 

By the end of the year one set of recommended transfers was still outstanding in order to finish the general masterplan for the Gelada EEP. 

However, some more “emergency recommendations” became necessary but these will not have an immediate impact on the general population 

development which hopefully will improve with a number of births in the forthcoming year. 

Work on husbandry guidelines continued. Surveys on keeping geladas in mixed-species enclosures and on practical routine-maintenance issues had 

been distributed and returned among/by EEP participants. 

Research on saliva of grass eating mammals including geladas gives additional hints for diet requirements. Results from the studies are expected in 

2009. 

There is a very good interest in geladas among EAZA members. 

Zlin Lesna Zoo, Whipsnade Wild Animal Park and Jersey Zoo are top on the list as future participants in the Gelada EEP. However, zoos already 

participating in the Gelada EEP provide facilities for a growing stock and therefore must be considered in the same way when deciding on further 

transfers within the management plan.

The population remained rather stable during the past years. No animals are kept outside the EAZA region. Stillbirths are quite common, and in case 

viable offspring is born unexperienced mothers most likely kill their infants. New holders are needed to further strengthen the captive population.

To reach the goal of 90% GD in 100 years, the current population should grow to 563 animals. According to PM2000 fifteen founders are needed to 

reach the goal of 90% GD at the end of 100 years. 

With a population size in 2007 of 185 (potentially) fertile and pure animals it is possible to maintain only 84,6% GD.

Summary 



The status of the population of Hanuman langurs has been stable over the last 4 years. 

The number of animals within the Ceylon langur population is declining, and as the keeping institutions want to give up this species, the Ceylon 

langurs will vanish from European zoos. 

In 2007 two new institutions started to keep Hanuman langurs, none in 2008. Some new breeding groups will be started and existing groups are 

expected to build up their numbers in the coming years. So altogether the situation for the population of Hanuman langurs is good.
