THE POTTO
The patio is an animal that lives in West Africa. Though it looks like
a squirrel, the patio belongs to a large group of mammals which includes
apes and man. It is a very slow moving animal and is most active at night.
It has a very short tail, a thumb, and an index finger.
Patios live in groups or colonies. They have loud voices that can be
heard for miles. In captivity, the potto is delicate and must be kept in a
warm cage.
CAR O L PRESTON
Headmistress 1938-1961
We, the class of 1961, the first to spend all ten years in the new school
bLlilding, are now leaving just as the school reaches a new landmark in its
distinguished record. Without Miss Preston's continuing wise guidance and
steadying influence which has left its lasting mark on us our years at
Potomac could not have been so pleasant or so successful. Therefore, we
are proud to dedicate our yearbook to her with affection and all best
wishes as we leave Potomac together.
HOBBIES
Glee Club
The Glee Club or Hobby Group, as it is more often called, is headed
by Mr. Langstaff. Init are girls who like to sing in parts, in a small group,
and for the fun of just singing. They sing on special occasions such as
the Christmas play and special assemblies. Mr. Langstaff's guidance combined
with his experience as a singer makes this hobby a great opportunity
for these Upper School girls.
Fix-It
Under the leadership of Mrs. Price the little band of fixiteers takes
on the job of repairing tattered classroom chairs, painting bulletin boards,
dipping candles, and other such work. They are a very useful group because
they will do any odd job that needs to be done. They help to make the
school look its very best.
Scouts
Here at Potomac, scouting, led by Miss Seth, is a major activity
throughout the school. The third and fourth graders are Brownies and
the fifth and sixth graders are Girl Scouts. In the Upper School girls keep
up scouting only if they are really interested.
The younger girls learn the laws, the promise, and how to be good
scouts. They play games, make things, and go on small hikes. The older
scouts do many useful things both for the school and the community.
They help with the younger scouts, and fill Christmas stockings. They also
have great fun on cook-outs, overnights, and mountain trips.
Art
During the winter the Art Hobby group designed and created a
Venetian glass mosaic tile coffee-table to be used with a furniture grouping
in the lobby of the new lower School. This will be a memorial to "Catherine"
who greeted children and parents in the front hall from 1929-1959.
Science
Major projects of the Science Hobby group have been the constructions
of displays of rocks and minerals, birds and their nests, evergreens,
and a terrarium for amphibians for the new lower School. Other projects
have been the clearing of honeysuckle from the Nature Trail and the construction
of a topographic map of the Nature Trail for the use of visitors
and classes.
News and Vie'.l
News and Views, a small magazine, contains news and compositions
written by the students of the school. The staff determines what material
will be accepted to maintain the high standard of writing. After it has
been assembled by the board, News and Views is distributed' for the enjoyment
of subscribers.

At Potomac there are four head prefects representing the student body.
The prefects hold office for one semester. The first three head prefects
are ninth graders and the fourth is an eighth grader. Each class elects two
class prefects for a semester.
The Head Prefect conducts the Monday morning assemblies and runs
the weekly prefect meetings. These are held to discuss new ideas and
alter former rules if necessary. The second prefect, or Social Service Prefect,
takes care of all the student service in the school. She is also head of the
Lower School lunch aides and runs all drives. The third prefect, Assembly
Chairman, arranges and runs the Wednesday afternoon Upper School assemblies.
The fourth prefect is the secretary for the prefect meetings. She
keeps a full and accurate account of everything said and decided upon in the
meetings.
Each girl has been chosen to do certain jobs, fulfill certain obligations,
and carry great responsibilities. We are very proud of the excellent work
that these eight girls have done during this year.
Last fall during sports the Middle School girls played soccer. The
boys played soccer, did exercises, and played touch-football. Hockey was
played in the Upper School. The Ninth Grade had rousing games with
Madeira, Saint Agnes, Hawthorne, and Cathedral. During the winter in
both the Upper and Middle Schools basketball was played. The boys did
exercises and had a few hikes. After spring vacation the boys played
baseball. The girls in the Middle and Upper Schools played la crosse, softball,
and volleyball. In the Eighth and Ninth grades badminton tournaments
were held and a good deal of la crosse was played. We would like
to thank Miss Archer for the wonderful times on field, court, and diamond.
Potomac wil.1 always miss the Collet sisters. For almost half of the
fifty-odd years of Potomac's existence, students have been guided and
inspired in the study of the French language and people by the Collet
sisters.
Two generations of Potomac Upper School students can thank Mlle.
Gaby for an excellent foundation in French grammar as well as an accent
"vraiment francais". Students and alumnae are grateful to Mlle. R. Collet
for the many patient hours spent with the beginning classes.
The school will always remember these two sisters and will miss
them very much.
