VAC materials in space:
Press Information
VACUUMSCHMELZE supports satellite project
No.: 11/11 Hanau, 31 st May 2011
Hanau / Frankfurt – Advanced materials produced by VAC are out in space.
A group of students at the university Scuola universitaria professionale
della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI) asked the Hanau-based company for assis-
tance in the construction of a small cubiform satellite called TIsat-1. The
satellite has a mass of one kilogram and an edge length of ten centimetres.
The Swiss students are taking part in an international university program
called CubeSat. VAC supplied rods of PERMENORM ® 5000 H2 in various
diameters, used for magnetic oscillation control, and permanent magnets
made of VACODYM ® , which enable the earth's magnetic field to be used as
orientation for the satellite. This assistance gained VAC the status of offi-
cial sponsor of the project.
TIsat-1 saw lift-off on 12 July last year at Sriharikota Space Center in India,
when the satellite was launched into space from the PSLV-C15 rocket. It
has transmitted signals back to the earth ever since.
VACODYM magnets are produced from neodymium-iron-boron alloys and have
the highest energy densities currently available. The outstanding magnetic prop-
erties of this group of materials are due to their strongly magnetic Nd2Fe14B ma-
trix phase with extremely high saturation magnetization and high magnetic anisot-
ropy. The magnets also have good mechanical properties due to their ductile
neodymium-rich binder phase along the grain boundaries.
PERMENORM 5000 H2 is a 48 % NiFe alloy with relatively high saturation mag-
netization (1.55 T) and moderate initial and maximum permeability.
PERMENORM 5000 H2 is supplied with a large-grain isotropic structure and is
suitable for a wide range of applications including summation current transform-
ers and relay components for FI switches, transducers, transformers, power
chokes, filters, rotor and stator cores, coil cores for stepper motors in quartz
clocks, flux concentrator plates and pole pieces in magnetic valves.

VACUUMSCHMELZE (VAC), based in Hanau, designs, produces and markets advanced
materials, primarily magnetic but also with other physical properties, and related products.
In 1914, the first vacuum furnace laid the foundation for today's VACUUMSCHMELZE,
which has 1,400 employees. Industrial vacuum melting techniques for alloys have been in
operation since 1923.
VAC Group today achieves annual sales of around 350 million euros in over 40 countries
and is the holder of more than 600 patents, placing it among the world’s most highly
innovative developers of advanced industrial materials.
VAC’s range of products comprises a broad array of semi-finished products, parts,
inductive components for electronics, magnets and magnetic systems for use in a wide
variety of fields and industries spanning watch-making and medical technology,
regenerative energies, shipbuilding, installation, and the automotive and aviation
industries. VAC’s custom solutions are developed in close collaboration with the
customer, reflecting the company’s expertise in materials and state-of-the-art production
technology.
