When it was difficult to obtain copies of the Bible,<br />

Christians were known to commit large portions of the<br />

Scriptures to memory. p. 25, Para. 2, [HOLINESS].<br />

<strong>The</strong>y retained the truth in the love of it, and honored the<br />

cause of truth by giving a proper reason of their hope. Now<br />

is less required of those who live in this favored age,<br />

when Bibles and other useful books can be so easily<br />

obtained, and when an increase of light is shining from the<br />

word of God? p. 25, Para. 3, [HOLINESS].<br />

But some will say, I cannot read the Bible, or other good<br />

books. Answer. A blessing is pronounced on those who hear,<br />

as well as on those who read. Rev, i, 3. And how can<br />

persons be blessed for hearing unless they learn and retain<br />

what they hear? p. 26, Para. 1, [HOLINESS].<br />

If the loins of our minds are girded with truth, we shall<br />

be prepared to meet the temptations of the enemy, and the<br />

objections of the opposers of truth, as Jesus did when he<br />

quoted scripture to Satan. And if we do what we can on our<br />

part to retain and obey the truth, we may expect that the<br />

Holy Spirit will bring the truth to our remembrance, and<br />

thus make up for our lack of memory. p. 26, Para. 2,<br />

[HOLINESS].<br />

Imagination. p. 26, Para. 3, [HOLINESS].<br />

Imagination is "the power or faculty of the mind by which<br />

it perceives and forms ideas of things communicated to it<br />

by the organs of sense." Webster. It is by this faculty<br />

that ideal images, or pictures of absent objects and scenes<br />

are formed. For instance, when in the silence of the night,<br />

reviewing the events of the day, we see the persons that we<br />

have visited, the country through which we have passed, and<br />

other things which have struck our vision, it is the<br />

imagination that pictures these things in our minds. p.<br />

26, Para. 4, [HOLINESS].<br />

Imagination was designed to represent real and true<br />

objects and scenes; but it sometimes goes farther than<br />

this: it creates things that are unreal and untrue. p. 26,<br />

Para. 5, [HOLINESS].<br />

This is seen in Mythology, where we read the description<br />

of creatures and scenes which have existed only in the<br />

imagination. This is also seen in the description of the
