e dearer to us than life, and we should gladly suffer for
the sake of Christ who has suffered so much for us. This
did the early Christians. p. 37, Para. 2, [HOLINESS].
Says Paul, "For thy sake are we killed all the day long;
we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." "I protest by
your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die
daily." "Always bearing about in the body the dying of the
Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be manifest
in our mortal flesh! For we which live are always delivered
unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus
might be made manifest in our mortal flesh." "In labors
more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more
frequent, in deaths oft. p. 37, Para. 3, [HOLINESS].
Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I
suffered shipwreck, a night and a day have I been in the
deep; in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils
of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by
the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the
wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false
brethren; in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often,
in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and
nakedness. Besides those things that are without, that
which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches."
"But none of these things move me, neither count I my life
dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with
joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord
Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God." "Then
Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine
heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die
at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus." Rom. viii,
36; 1 Cor. xv, 31; 2 Cor. iv, 9; xi, 23-28; Acts xx, 24;
xxi, 13. p. 37, Para. 4, [HOLINESS].
Millions of saints have shown that their lives were
sanctified by laying them down for God and his truth; and
though we may not now be tested as they were, yet we may
know how far our lives are sanctified by our willingness to
suffer in the cause of truth. If we are unwilling to deny
ourselves and suffer for God now, we certainly would be
unwilling to lay down our lives for his sake. p. 38, Para.
1, [HOLINESS].
While looking over his sufferings Paul said, "But I would
ye should understand, brethren, that the things which have
