Common Name : West <strong>Indian</strong> pinkroot<br />

<strong>Family</strong> : Spigeliaceae<br />

50-70 cm high, unbranched, or with few pairs <strong>of</strong><br />

branches arising near the base. Stem erect,<br />

cylindrical, green, glabrous, with a few remote<br />

pairs <strong>of</strong> small leaves and an apical<br />

pseudowhorl <strong>of</strong> four larger leaves.<br />

Lamina ovate-oblong to ovate-lanceolate,<br />

3-10 x 1-3 cm, herbaceous, scabrous above,<br />

glabrous beneath, cuneate and <strong>of</strong>ten decurrent<br />

at the base, attenuate at the apex. Leaves with<br />

interpetiolar, broadly triangular, blunt,<br />

glabrous stipules.<br />

Inflorescence terminal in the axils <strong>of</strong> the<br />

whorled upper leaves, upto 15 cm long.<br />

Flowers white to red or purplish.<br />

Capsule 4-5 x 5-6 mm, tuberculate.<br />

Spigelia anthelmia L.<br />

Obliquely ellipsoid or ovoid, 1.5-2 mm, dull<br />

brown, tuberculate.<br />
