Coal Mine Methane And Coalbed Methane Development In The Donetsk Region, Ukraine 1.4 Estimate of Methane Reserves in the Donbass Basin The thermal maturation of coal deposits in the Donbass coalfield was accompanied by the generation of huge quantities of methane. The amount of gas is estimated to be up to 117 trillion m 3 (4,100 Tcf), and is thought to be one of the largest onshore gas resources in the world. The peculiarities of the distribution of hydrocarbon gases in Donbass are closely connected with specific geological conditions of gas formation that were much affected by different chemical, biological and tectonic factors, that occurred at different periods of time and in different areas. 3 Gas-bearing areas in the Donbass Basin were formed during times of tectonic activity which began with inversion. A complex nature of inversion and denudation of coal seams caused gas migration that dominated over the gas generation processes and thus led to intensive gas redistribution in and changes to existing gas-bearing formations and, finally, to transforming it into the two current distinct patterns of vertical and areal distribution of gas in the formations 4 . These events, and resulting distribution of methane within the structure, are shared throughout many of the Carboniferous coal basins of Eastern Europe, including Poland and the Czech Republic. The amplitude of movements during the inversion process was from 4 to 11 km, with the coal-bearing strata exposed to shallow burial conditions. At that point, some gas was lost and areas of undersaturation with respect to gas were formed in the upper part of the section. The composition of the coal seams’ gas consists of methane, but can also contain some ethane, propane, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Heavier hydrocarbons are mainly contained in coal seams of medium to low volatile rank. The gas contained in highly metamorphized anthracites and meta-anthracites mainly consists of nitrogen and carbon dioxide with only a small amount of methane. Coal seams also contain trace amounts of butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, hydrogen, helium, argon, neon, krypton and xenon. The absorptive capacity of coal increases with rank and can reach up to 20 to 25 m 3 /t of dry basis for high to medium volatile coals and up to 40 to 45 m 3 /t on a dry basis for higher rank coal. 3 V.
