1.6.2 Bazhanov Mine Coal Mine Methane And Coalbed Methane Development In The Donetsk Region, Ukraine The Bazhanov mine area is located within the territory of the district of Makeyevka city in Donetsk Region. The area is situated on watershed of the Krivoy Torets and the Kalmius Rivers. The area is located on a hilly steppe plain, cut with ravines and gullies. Mineral resources of the mine are owned by the Makeyevugol State Coal Mining Company. The Bazhanov Mine is situated in the north-eastern part of the town of Makeyevka, a highly developed mining area which includes by-product-coking and steel industries and is also a favorable location with respect to coking coal consumers, including the Makeyevka, Donetsk, Rutchekovsk coking plants, and the Kalmius Central Washing-house situated 30 km from the mine. The mine is highly accessible to neighboring mines and centers of population by means of highway and asphalt roads. In the northern part of the area, there are two rail lines, the Yasinovataya-KrinichnayaIlovaysk and Yasinovataya- Makeyevka trunk lines. These lines are joined with branch lines to the Bazhanov Mine, the Yasinovataya coking plant and the Kirov Plant. The mine is supplied with electricity by means of high-voltage lines of the Donbassenergy System generated from the Zuevka Hydroelectric Power Station. The Bazhanov Mine began operations in 1957. Currently (2006), the capacity of the mine is 0.76 million tons of coal per year and only one coal layer, the m3 seam, is being exploited. The area of the mine encompasses about 39 square km. 1.6.2.1 Geologic Structure The mine area is located between the Burozovskaya (aka Kalininskaya) and Chaykinskaya flexures. Between the Burozovskoy and Chaikinskoy folds, the regional dip is 4 to 8° to the northeast. The Burozovskoy monocline fold near the mine is traced with exploratory wells along the monoclinal strike. The dip of the coal seams is gentle, averaging 4 to 15 °, but can reach 25-70° in region of the of monocline folds. Steep dips occur along the monocline fold area defined by the mine workings at the Schmidt Mine NQ3, NQ4 and Kapitalnaya Mine NQ 1, NQ2, where the dip angle is 60 to 90°. The Burozovskoy monocline fold stretches from southeast to the northeast with dips of 45 to 50° in the northwest and increasing to 70 to 75° in the southeast. The southeast fold limb is considered to be the up-thrown side. Vertical displacement of the fold reaches 1,200 m. To Geologic Assessment and CMM/CBM Resource Base Analysis 1-29
