Coal Mine Methane And Coalbed Methane Development In The Donetsk Region, Ukraine 1.6.1.8 Estimation of Gas Reserves As part of the process of estimating the CMM reserves of the Yuzhno-Donbasskaya #3 mine the degasification rate for an 11 year period (1995 to 2005) was analyzed (Exhibit 1.19). During that period the mine produced between 1,502 to 4,301 tons of coal per day and yielded methane emission rates of between 22.5 to 107.8 m 3 per minute. The average annual relative methane abundance of the mine varied between 11.9 to 47.6 m 3 per ton on a dry ash-free basis during this time period and its normalized value increased from 19.2 to 28.2 m 3 per ton. Data provided by technical staff from the mine, for a 15 month period from October 2004 to December 2005 show that the normalized methane production is relatively stable at 31.1 m 3 per ton of coal per day (Exhibit 1.20). Given the mine’s total coal reserves at 158 million tons, the total methane resource is approximately 4.9 Billion m 3 . This is a slightly more conservative estimate of the EPA reported reserves of 5.9 Billion m 3 in 2001.
