Notes for William Edgar <strong>Harlan</strong>:<br />

Willie was murdered in Oklahoma. One <strong>of</strong> Willie's employees was arrested <strong>and</strong> jailed. Willie paid the<br />

employee's bail <strong>and</strong> fine <strong>and</strong> when the employee was informed that those funds would be withheld from<br />

his wages, he drew a pistol <strong>and</strong> killed Willie. [As told by Harry Trent Hutcheson, August 1998]<br />

William's tombstone gives his date <strong>of</strong> death as 1912. He was not buried in Cave <strong>Hill</strong> Cemetery,<br />

Louisville, Kentuc<strong>ky</strong>, until April 1913.<br />

William E. <strong>Harlan</strong>, Formerly <strong>of</strong> Louisville, <strong>and</strong> Nephew <strong>of</strong> Captain J. B. <strong>Harlan</strong> <strong>and</strong> Mr. Ed <strong>Harlan</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

this City, Shot by Negro Employee<br />

The news <strong>of</strong> the killing <strong>of</strong> Mr. William E. <strong>Harlan</strong>, <strong>of</strong> Muskogee, Oklahoma, was a shock to his friends<br />

here, where he <strong>and</strong> his sister had <strong>of</strong>ten visited. He was a nephew <strong>of</strong> Capt. J. B. <strong>and</strong> Mr. Ed <strong>Harlan</strong>, <strong>of</strong> this<br />

City.<br />

Mr. <strong>Harlan</strong> was shot by a negro farm h<strong>and</strong> in a dispute over some money which the negro owed him <strong>and</strong><br />

which he was about to hold out <strong>of</strong> his wages.<br />

Mr. <strong>Harlan</strong> left Louisville about three years ago to engage in farming in Oklahoma. He is survived by his<br />

wife, Miss Ada Shelton, <strong>of</strong> Stanford, Ky.; a daughter; his mother, Mrs. Ida <strong>Harlan</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a sister, Mrs.<br />

Harry Trent.<br />

The negro who committed the crime has been captured.<br />

The body was brought to Louisville for burial, <strong>and</strong> the funeral services were held Thursday. Mrs. <strong>Harlan</strong><br />

could not accompany her husb<strong>and</strong>'s remains, as their little daughter had just undergone an operation<br />

when her father was killed.<br />

Mrs. Ada S. <strong>Harlan</strong><br />

The funeral for Mrs. Ada Shelton <strong>Harlan</strong>, 72, a Louisville resident about 30 years ago, will be at 2 p.m.<br />

tomorrow at Harvey Brown Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Cave <strong>Hill</strong> Cemetery.<br />

Mrs. <strong>Harlan</strong> died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Jackson, Miss., where she lived with her daughter, Mrs.<br />

Eugene Morrison. She also is survived by a gr<strong>and</strong>son. The body will arrive here by train tomorrow<br />

morning <strong>and</strong> be taken to Pearson's, 149 Breckinridge Lane.<br />
