Notes for William Edgar Harlan:
Willie was murdered in Oklahoma. One of Willie's employees was arrested and jailed. Willie paid the
employee's bail and fine and when the employee was informed that those funds would be withheld from
his wages, he drew a pistol and killed Willie. [As told by Harry Trent Hutcheson, August 1998]
William's tombstone gives his date of death as 1912. He was not buried in Cave Hill Cemetery,
Louisville, Kentucky, until April 1913.

William E. Harlan, Formerly of Louisville, and Nephew of Captain J. B. Harlan and Mr. Ed Harlan of
this City, Shot by Negro Employee
The news of the killing of Mr. William E. Harlan, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, was a shock to his friends
here, where he and his sister had often visited. He was a nephew of Capt. J. B. and Mr. Ed Harlan, of this
City.
Mr. Harlan was shot by a negro farm hand in a dispute over some money which the negro owed him and
which he was about to hold out of his wages.
Mr. Harlan left Louisville about three years ago to engage in farming in Oklahoma. He is survived by his
wife, Miss Ada Shelton, of Stanford, Ky.; a daughter; his mother, Mrs. Ida Harlan, and a sister, Mrs.
Harry Trent.
The negro who committed the crime has been captured.
The body was brought to Louisville for burial, and the funeral services were held Thursday. Mrs. Harlan
could not accompany her husband's remains, as their little daughter had just undergone an operation
when her father was killed.

Mrs. Ada S. Harlan
The funeral for Mrs. Ada Shelton Harlan, 72, a Louisville resident about 30 years ago, will be at 2 p.m.
tomorrow at Harvey Brown Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Harlan died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Jackson, Miss., where she lived with her daughter, Mrs.
Eugene Morrison. She also is survived by a grandson. The body will arrive here by train tomorrow
morning and be taken to Pearson's, 149 Breckinridge Lane.
