John Bailey died in the Battle of Boonesboro in Maryland. He was a latin teacher at the University of
Virginia in Charlottsville and did not go to war until he took his brother's place. He did this in order for
his brother Thomas S. Harlan to return on furlough to get his crops in order and to see his family. He
was unmarried.
