Notes for Jesse Harlan:
Jesse and Sarah imigrated from Pennsylvania to Maryland after the birth of their children and then they moved on
to Albemarle Co., Virginia.
The house where Jesse was born was built about 1725 by his grandfather George. It was enlarged at least once,
perhaps when John inherited it when he became 21 (1737) (or more likely, perhaps, when he married in 1740.). It
was inhabited by the Harlan family until 1950 when Annie Harlan died. The house title descended through the

Notes for Thomas Samuel Harlan:
Thomas Samuel was born at the home of his father. Thomas S. was a planter and farmer. The home place was
said to have been named Glendower and sold by James White for Confederate money. It is still standing and is in
use in Glendower, Va. at this time (1954). The house is dark red brick with double colonial porches at each end.
The records of the sale of the place were destroyed when the courthouse at Scottsville burned to the ground. At
one time there were 1800 or more acres of land and they owned 300 slaves. I have heard my grandfather (written
by Elizabeth Strickler) John Bailey say that his father and grandfather would never sell a slave unless at the
slave's request. The case being that he wanted to marry a slave woman owed by someone else who would not sell
her. I have heard my grandfather say that only about three slaves were willing to leave the family after the Civil
War, but of course they no longer had the money to take care of them, as the money they had was Confederate.
The place that they moved to after leaving Glendower was called Meadowbrook and burned to the ground leaving
them nothing. I have heard John Bailey speak of being terribly hungry while playing with thousand dollar bills
along with his brothers. He recalled along this time of there coming a day when there was nothing in the house to
eat at all and of he and his brothers trying to eat some soap. The commissary later that day gave them the last
small ration of meal that would be issued. The family of Thomas S. then moved to West Virginia (Bath County)
where they resided until 1881 when they moved to Henry County, Kentucky on a farm between Ghent and
Warsaw. In the latter years of his life he and his wife, Mary Fleming, lived at La Grange, Kentucky, in the house
where his son Edgar Leslie Harlan later lived. His wife, Mary Fleming, was his first cousin once removed.
Thomas fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War. He enlisted in the C Company, 19th Infantry Regiment,
Virginia on April 17, 1861 in Scottsville, VA.

Notes for Thomas Samuel Harlan:
Thomas Samuel was born at the home of his father. Thomas S. was a planter and farmer. The home place was
said to have been named Glendower and sold by James White for Confederate money. It is still standing and is in
use in Glendower, Va. at this time (1954). The house is dark red brick with double colonial porches at each end.
The records of the sale of the place were destroyed when the courthouse at Scottsville burned to the ground. At
one time there were 1800 or more acres of land and they owned 300 slaves. I have heard my grandfather (written
by Elizabeth Strickler) John Bailey say that his father and grandfather would never sell a slave unless at the
slave's request. The case being that he wanted to marry a slave woman owed by someone else who would not sell
her. I have heard my grandfather say that only about three slaves were willing to leave the family after the Civil
War, but of course they no longer had the money to take care of them, as the money they had was Confederate.
The place that they moved to after leaving Glendower was called Meadowbrook and burned to the ground leaving
them nothing. I have heard John Bailey speak of being terribly hungry while playing with thousand dollar bills
along with his brothers. He recalled along this time of there coming a day when there was nothing in the house to
eat at all and of he and his brothers trying to eat some soap. The commissary later that day gave them the last
small ration of meal that would be issued. The family of Thomas S. then moved to West Virginia (Bath County)
where they resided until 1881 when they moved to Henry County, Kentucky on a farm between Ghent and
Warsaw. In the latter years of his life he and his wife, Mary Fleming, lived at La Grange, Kentucky, in the house
where his son Edgar Leslie Harlan later lived. His wife, Mary Fleming, was his first cousin once removed.
Thomas fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War. He enlisted in the C Company, 19th Infantry Regiment,
Virginia on April 17, 1861 in Scottsville, VA.

Notes for Virginia Tobatha Harlan:
Virginia and George Thompson were married in Virgiania. He was a Confederate soldier who was wounded and
taken into the home of James White Harlan to be nursed back to health. He fell in love with Tabby, as she was
called, and they were married and went back to Tennessee. Later they moved to Kentucky where he died and is
buried in Bowling Green, where they live in or around. When George Thompson died, Tobitha came to
Anchorage, Kentucky to live with there daughter Katherine Thompson and her husband Ernest Corbin. When she
died she was buried in the Valley of Rest at La Grange, Kentucky. The tombstone is no longer there, but she is in
the same plot as Thomas Samuel Harlan.
The 1900 Warren Co., KY census indicates that Virginia had a total of 4 children, all of whom where living in
1900.

The 1900 Warren Co., KY census lists George as being three years older than Virginia which would make him
born about 1828. The census lists him as being 59 years old in 1900 which would make him being born about
1841. The date of Virginia's birth should here is probably correct since it came out of the Harlan family bible.
That would mean that George was older than indicated in the 1900 census.

Richard J. Harlan was the son of John Morris Harlan. He was a nephew of Mary Fleming Harlan who married
Thomas Samuel Harlan. Richard resided in Fluvanna Co., Virginia.
During the Civil War Richard was a boat man for the Confederacy. He enlisted on 19 April 1861, as a Private at
the age of 23.
He served in Company D, 19th Infantry Regiment Virginia and was detailed on 01 June 1861 to the Color Guard.
He was promoted to Full Sergeant 3rd Class on 01 November 1861, Full Sergeant 1st Class on 03 December
1861, Full Lieutenant 3rd Class on 24 February 1862, and Full Lieutenant 1st Class on 08 April 1862.
He was wounded on 27 June 1862 at Gaines' Mill, VA, promoted to Full Captain on 30 January 1863 and
returned to service on 25 April 1863. He was wounded again on 03 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA and back on the
rolls on 15 August 1864.
He was imprisoned as a POW on 02 April 1865 at Hatcher's Run, VA and hospitalized on 08 April 1865 at
Petersburg, VA for a gun wound in the right thigh. He was confined on 12 April 1865 at City Point, VA and on
17 May 1865 at Newport News, VA. He took the Oath Allegiance on 15 June 1865 at Newport News, VA.
His Civil War records describe him as being 5'10" in height with blue eyes, dark hair and fair completion.

submitted the detective piece and the two sketches complied here. John B. Harlan was the brother of her

grandfather, Howard Hinton Harlan (7956iii).
One of our Harlan cousins, James Forbes Harlan (#7956i), had some unusual professions. His brother, L&N
Railroad detective John B. Harlan (#7956v), provided the following information.
Born in Albemarle County, Va., on July 12,1851, James moved with his family shortly after the Civil War to
Mountain Grove, Bath County, Va., where they resided in a cabin on property owned by Colonel A.C.L.
Gatewood, of Confederate fame. The farm was situated at the fork of Little Back Creek and Big Back Creek.
“Mountain Grove was a little scattering village consisting of a Post Office, Blacksmith and Wheelwright shop,
and a Manufacturing Mill belonging to
old Colonel Gatewood,” brother John recalled. It was located with Warm Spring Mountain to the east and the
Allegheny Mountains to the west. “The little valley stretched up Big Back Creek perhaps eight or ten miles and
ranged from two hundred and fifty feet to half a mile in width. In that section at that time, the mountains
abounded with game, bear, deer, wolves, wild cats, panthers, catamount, wild turkey, pheasants, and. in fact all
manner of game, and our chief occupation while in that section was hunting, trapping, and fishing,” John wrote.
In 1873 or ’74, the family moved to Greenbrier County, crossing the Allegheny Mountains in ox carts. They lived
for about a year on Captain William Reed’s farm, about a mile and a half northwest of Frankfort. They then lived
for three years on the Lewis Creigh farm, then moved to Monroe County, to a section known as Swopes Knobs in
the mountains near Johnson’s Cross Roads, about 15 miles from union. Later the family moved to Henry County,
Ky.
During the years that James lived in Greenbrier and Monroe counties, he worked most of the time as a
“professional hacker of brush” on the mountains near Cranberry Glades in Pocahontas County, according to his
brother.
“While so engaged he came in contact with a Professor of Music from Richmond, Va., L.J. Whitt, who was also a
Professor of Penmanship,” John continued, “and the two became very much interested in each other, and
Professor Whitt induced Mr. Harlan to travel with him and give music lessons and also take lessons in
penmanship from him. They traveled together for two years or more, making quite a success in their profession.
After Professor Whitt had returned to Richmond from West Virginia, Mr. Harlan took up his profession of
teaching penmanship as well as giving music lessons on banjo and violin, more especially on the banjo.” James
became well known by traveling around to the crossroads school houses and teaching music and penmanship.
James Harlan’s first banjo was a large gourd strung with horse hair, made for him by his grandfather’s, servant,
known as Uncle Lewis, who drove the family carriage.
“After young Harlan got so he could strike a few tunes, there was a young lady in the neighborhood, Miss Mollie
Clark, who took an interest in him, and being a good performer on the banjo herself, she taught him all the
fundamental principles that she knew concerning banjo picking, ” John wrote.
He was considered a “very great entertainer,” according to his brother, who added, “Young Harlan was always
ready to play for the old fashion dances or help entertain the youngsters in the several communities in which he
lived, but never charged anything for this service. It was always rendered cheerfully. However, he made a nominal
charge for lessons in penmanship and music.”
The family moved to Henry County, Ky, near New Castle, in 1881. In Kentucky, James Harlan continued to teach
music and penmanship for a number of
years, teaching in Indiana, Ohio, Arkansas, and Tennessee as well.
Around 1915, he began to work for the railroad in Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky. In 1927, the, year John
Harlan wrote his sketch, his brother was located in Covington, Ky., and had been working for the Louisville and
Nashville Railroad Company for three years. He was planning to travel back to Virginia to participate in the Old
Fiddler’s Contest at Ronceverte.

Willie was murdered in Oklahoma. One of Willie's employees was arrested and jailed. Willie paid the
employee's bail and fine and when the employee was informed that those funds would be withheld from
his wages, he drew a pistol and killed Willie. [As told by Harry Trent Hutcheson, August 1998]
William's tombstone gives his date of death as 1912. He was not buried in Cave Hill Cemetery,
Louisville, Kentucky, until April 1913.

William E. Harlan, Formerly of Louisville, and Nephew of Captain J. B. Harlan and Mr. Ed Harlan of
this City, Shot by Negro Employee
The news of the killing of Mr. William E. Harlan, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, was a shock to his friends
here, where he and his sister had often visited. He was a nephew of Capt. J. B. and Mr. Ed Harlan, of this
City.
Mr. Harlan was shot by a negro farm hand in a dispute over some money which the negro owed him and
which he was about to hold out of his wages.
Mr. Harlan left Louisville about three years ago to engage in farming in Oklahoma. He is survived by his
wife, Miss Ada Shelton, of Stanford, Ky.; a daughter; his mother, Mrs. Ida Harlan, and a sister, Mrs.
Harry Trent.
The negro who committed the crime has been captured.
The body was brought to Louisville for burial, and the funeral services were held Thursday. Mrs. Harlan
could not accompany her husband's remains, as their little daughter had just undergone an operation
when her father was killed.

J. Harry Trent, 62, vice president of Oscar Farmer and Sons, feed dealers, died of a heart attack at 5 a.m.
Monday at his home, 4606 S. 3rd.
A native of Meade County, Kentucky, Mr. Trent came to Louisville in 1898, and after a short business
course he went to work for the feed company. He served as treasurer for the Beechmont Baptist Church
for twenty-six years.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Anna H. Trent; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Harp, Chattanooga, and Mrs.
Beverly Hutcheson; a brother, Guy Trent; two sisters, Mrs. Laurence Owens, Chicago, and Mrs. Edna
Boone, Roberta, KY, and a granddaughter.

Weldon and Marshall Hill, who have been keeping "bach" on their farm 2-1/2 miles West of New Castle
are no longer living in a womanless home. Tuesday morning when A. Sid Morgan and other neighbors of
the Hill brothers look toward their home they were surprised to see a young lady on the premises stirring
hither and thither and looking the mistress of all she surveyed. It developed that Weldon Hill, the elder
of the two boys, had been married the evening before at 8 o'clock in La Grange without pomp and
unusual ceremony, and some time between the two days they had rounded in at the Hill homestead and
were already set up fpr business and each performing his or her part properly in their new and sacred
relation.
The bride is none other than Miss Bernice Harlan, daughter of those clever persons, Mr. and Mrs. Ed L.
Harlan of La Grange former residents of New Castle Kentucky. The bride is a business like and sensible
girl, who for five years has been associated with Ballard Brothers in a clerical capacity. She is a girl of
comeliness and personal worth, and her husband should be overwhelmed with congratulations by reason
of his good fortune in making good his claim upon her heart.
The Hill brothers are clever boys. They have a nice new home nearing completion with all
arrangesments nearly completed for the incoming governess. Why wait, thought Weldon, she might as
well come in now and have the satisfaction of ordering the details. So the wedding was speeded up
some. The manner in which the whole transaction was effectuated evidences the good common sense of
the parties. The groom is a son of Pat Hill former clerk of Henry County now deceased. [This is
incorrect. William Weldon Hill's father was Horace William Hill.] His mother if the wife of J. B. Pyles of
La Grange.

Miss Bernice Harlan and Mr. Weldon Hill were married Monday evening at 8 o'clock, at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Harlan. The house was decorated in roses, sweet peas, ferns and
honey suckles. Miss Ruby Starks ws maid of honor, and was dressed in a handsome blue chiffon,
carrying a bunch of sweet peas. The bride wore a wistaria greogette crepe over crepe de chine. Mr. Jesse
Harlan was groomsman. It was a pretty home wedding, none but the immediate family being present.
The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Frank Richardson, of the Methodist Church. The bridal couple
left immediately after the ceremony for their home near Smithfield. Both the young people are favorites
here and received many handsome, also useful presents of silverware, furniture, cut glass, household
linens, etc.
