DISSERTATION
Title: “Essays on the Symbolic Management of Category Affiliations.”
Status: Dissertation proposal defended in June 2011
Committee: Peer Fiss (Chair), Nandini Rajagopalan, Feng Zhu, Peter Monge
Abstract: My dissertation examines how firms manage their identity by strategically positioning
themselves within an industry using category labels. Specifically, I study how a change in categorization
strategy to attract key stakeholders at the initial public offering (IPO) influences legitimacy and
performance. The first essay explores why, and under what conditions, firms engage in the management
of their identity using category labels. The second essay examines the performance consequences of
different categorization strategies. Drawing on the categorization literature from both sociology and social
psychology, I argue that firms which adopt a more inclusive category label to convey market potential
and/or decrease the number of category labels spanned to imply a focused identity will experience a more
positive IPO performance. Results based on over 400 Internet IPO firms provide support for the
hypotheses. This research contributes to strategic management by connecting with the categorization
literature to examine how firms can facilitate early-stage resource acquisition by strategically managing
their identity.
