Digital Photography I
Tuition: $375 CEUs: 1.5
Instructor: Thomas England, Freelance Photographer
6 sessions: Wed, Apr 11–May 16 / 6:30–9:00 p.m. (Alpharetta)
6 sessions: Wed, Jul 11–Aug 15 / 6:30–9:00 p.m. (Alpharetta)
Take full advantage of the features offered by your digital camera.
Ideal for the enthusiastic hobbyist or a serious amateur, students
will focus on how the operation of digital cameras differs from
their film counterparts through a combination of class lecture and
photographic assignments with instructor Thomas England, who
has spent years shooting assignments for national news magazines.
Digital technology has changed the field of photography more
rapidly and dramatically than any previous technical advance—
learning how the camera capabilities apply to actual photo taking
and the impact of megapixel, file compression, and print v. email
output will greatly enhance your success in photography. We’ll also
begin exploring the more complex aspects of photography such as
lighting, composition, use of flash, color, and depth of field. You
are encouraged to delay the purchase of supplementary equipment
until after class discussions.
photography requires more than just a basic understanding
of the technical capabilities of your camera. Translating
an image captured from a three dimensional world into
a two-dimensional plane requires attention to elements
outside of content. Practice looking beyond the subject
matter of your photographs to see the formal elements that
actually construct the picture. Begin seeing photographs
as an art form that communicates emotion, mood, and
interpretation rather than a passive reflection of objects or
people. Class will utilize discussion, traditional lectures
with PowerPoint, and critiques of student work. Computer
usage will be outside of class.
The Photograph as Evidence:
Approaches to Documentary
Photography
Tuition: $289 CEUs: 1.2
Instructor: Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier, Award-Winning
Photographer and Photo-Based Mixed Media Artist
6 sessions: Thu, Apr 19–May 24 / 7:00–9:00 p.m.
The tradition of documentary photography is wide and
varied. This class focuses on the idea of the photograph
as evidence. The overall goal of the course is to guide the
student toward producing a concise body of work that
is documentary in nature. The course begins with the
development of ideas through the examination of historical
aspects of documentary work and then moves quickly
to the examination of contemporary issues. The course
also examines point of view, theme development, basics
of oral interviews, legal and ethical issues, and the series
format. Weekly lectures and critiques are a mainstay of the
course as students are guided toward the production of a
small printed portfolio. Textbooks are suggested but not
required. Textbooks: Let Us Now Praise Famous Men,
Doing Oral History
when you share them upon your return. This course
is an enjoyable way to improve your photographic skills
