Crossing Guard Theresa Annerino is
assigned to the corner at 37th and Lowe
Streets.
THEIR BADGES ALL SHINY, their skirts
and blouses pressed and fresh, the Chicago
Police Department's wonderful
group of compassionate, cautious ladies,
known as Crossing Guards, have joined
with the thousands of Chicago schoolchildren
in a new school year.
There were joyful greetings as the
children renewed their acquaintance
with these familiar friends-the Crossing
Guards on the corner. Some new
friendships were begun at corners where
the guard had been changed.
Ever alert, ever watchful, guardians
of schoolchildren on their way to and
from classes, these women continue to
fulfill a vital role as public servants of
the Chicago taxpayer.
There is a story for every Crossing
Guard of kind deeds and kind words_
More than one has lent money to a
child without lunch or bus fare and
more .than one has dried fresh tears,
buttoned a coat or comforted a real
or imagined grief.
