2.2.2 Population
The population of the DDAC is analyzed based on the 1984 and 1994 census (Table 3).
During the ten years period the population of the Council has highly increased. During
the 1984 census the total population of DDAC was 155,308. Out of the total population,
the number of urban population identified to be 99,980 and the rural 55,328, representing
64.4 and 35.6 percent as urban and rural population respectively. However, during the
second census period of 1994, the total population of the Council has been found to be
251,864 consisting of 173,188 (68.8%) and 78,676 (31.2%) urban and rural population
respectively.

The total population size of the Council grew at the rate of 4.8 percent between the two
censal periods, while the urban and rural population grew at the rate of 5.5 and 3.5
percent respectively.
AS it can be observed from tThe population density map (Fig3), from the total rural
population of the Council, 76 percent are settling confined to a small area (2.07% of the
Council total area) in Dire Dawa town, which is the administrative city of the Council,
with average density of about 9482 persons per square km.
Peasant association which are found encircling Dire Dawa town are moderately
populated than the remaining rural areas with highly sparsely populated and found at
relative distance of the Council administrative city i.e., Dire Dawa town. The average
density of the rural population is about 73 persons per square kilometers.
