ACKNOWLEDGMENT
I am deeply grateful to my thesis advisor, Dr. Neil Davison, for the guidance,
encouragement, and patience he showed me throughout the research and writing
process. Having introduced me to the complexity and richness of James Joyce's works,
Dr. Davison inspired me to pursue this course of study and taught me the methods to
do so. He has been truly generous with both his time and advice, and instrumental in
the completion of this project.
I wish to thank Dr. Vicki Collins for her aid in the composition of my thesis, her
insightful comments, and, especially, her continued interest in my academic
development. I also wish to express my gratitude to the other members of my graduate
committee, Dr. Bob Wess and Dr. Vreneli Farber, for their support and guidance.
I must also acknowledge my son, Jonathon, who, having sufferedthrough both
his parents attending graduate school, showed a remarkable degree of patience and
